India to buy 36 fighter jets from France. But it does not rule out that there may be talk about the purchase of Swedish Gripen, Saab believes. India has decided to buy 36 fighter jets from Dassault, AFP reports.
The order must be written in formally by the Indian and French defense ministers on September 23, said a senior official of the Indian Ministry of Defense for the French news agency.
Defence group Saab has tried to interest the Indian government to buy Gripen fighters. Among others, the representatives of Saab when Prime Minister Stefan Löfven in February visited India.
India has negotiated with Dassault to buy Rafale combat aircraft of the type in four years. From the beginning it was about to buy 126 planes, but the number has slimmed down during the negotiations.
India to buy 36 French plan is nothing to preclude that there may be a deal with Saab if the Swedish Gripen, according to Saab.
- Our assessment, and the assessment of others, is that the need in India is greater than 36 planes, said Sebastian Carlsson, Head of Saab.
- We continue to market the Gripen in India even after such a contract signing.
He recalls that the original contract - that did not - about 126 planes. This creates a gap between 36 and 126 planes.
- The gap we have to compete, says Carlsson, adding that the need can even be greater than 126 planes.
Even Indian media report that the need for fighter aircraft is significantly greater than the 36 plan. Newspaper The Indian Express points to Griffin as a possible alternative in competition even with the US F-16 and Tejas, who is a domestic air force.
Both Lockheed Martin and Boeing also wooing the Indian government to fill the gap, reports Reuters.
