SAAB and Brazil sign contract for Gripen NG, 28 single-seat & 8 two-seat for US$5.4Bn

are you kidding ?

No I am serious.

You don't want to manufacture Gripens.

Your other option is MiG-35 whose flyaway price is cheaper but lifecycle costs kinda make it up for the same per unit.

Or the Su-30MKI which is around US$ 120 million apiece.

Brazil needs lot more Fighter Jets in their Air Force than what they currently have

Their contract initially stated a future order of 84 more initially.

Brazil's threat isn't a national level threat of an invasion. It is more to do with counter insurgency and anti-drug operations, which they use their own Super Tucanos very effectively.

A 110 odd Gripen fleet will suffice for them. Their only challenger of any remote sorts is Venzuela equipped with Su-30MK2. And they aren't each others' enemies anyway.

Brazilian firms will build 80 percent of the airframe of the Gripen E fighters due to be purchased by Brazil, the head of Saab said on Monday.

The deal is part of a “really strong technology transfer package,”
Currently the problem is, the previous regime gave too much leverage to Dassault which is now going back on the whole discussion of TOT; the central premise on which MMRCA was held. They are not willing to divulge that level of tech which they agreed upon first. If this was a first time round, they would have been rejected long back. But since Dassault has a history in India, there was that back channel negotiations going on.

Well we already make 100% airframe of more sophisticated MKI and with MMRCA we are looking to build on our capabilities so I guess we will be getting more ToT than Brazil.

Which makes me wonder if it is India, by delaying the contract is looking to take advantage of the fact that we can afford to give Rafale the slip while French aerospace Industry will wither away without export orders ?

Recent rumours about Egypt and UAE's interest in Rafale support this theory that France is aggressively looking for more customers to gain leverage.

they do, but Brazil really doesn't have any enemies in South America.
also interesting stuff in Brazil costs more than most countries because of the Brazil Cost

so I wonder how that's going to effect the true cost of building the Gripen E/F in Brazil

su30mki cost about $75million
Su35 cost about $65 million
Mig 35 cost about $35million
LCA cost about $35 million (version 2 will cost about $40-45million)
JF-17 block 2 cost about $30 million
.... etc

even might get American counter parts like F-16/ F15

UAE is keener on Typhoons along the lines of Saudi. Egypt will be arming itself with Russian fighters, mark my words.

They tried to grab Oman but those guys are also keen on getting EFTs from UK.

In the end, our pilots are suffering and it is about time that NaMo and AJ decide on the jet.

Brazil was their earlier promised launch customer under Lula and Sarkozy regimes. But Dilma changed it big time, focusing on getting a more quieter supplier.

Ukraine also didn't thought he had much enemies got a hell of a beating all of a sudden friends become enemies in this world so if they are waiting for that day when they will be beaten up many of there area captured and than they would realize O crap we should have build our forces than no body can do nothing about it

That is the fly away cost not including life-cycle costs, which are much higher. It inflates the price tag to almost 1.5 times to 2 times. Our MKI's cost that I mentioned was inclusive of support costs too per aircraft.

TBH you don't have a range problem in your country and a single engine Gripen would pretty much serve your needs. If Brazil, which is like 2.5 times our size can consider this, then it should be cakewalk for you guys.

Moreover, your infrastructure has essentially been Russian and Chinese.

Getting new twin engines would mean re-building everything from scratch new.

South Americans are like amigos they don't war with one another...much :eek:

better safe than sorry as they say :rap:
Exactly better be prepared for the worst rather than all of a sudden finding in a position in which you are able to do nothing except for crying and expect world will help you which they will most probably not.

Yeah. Imagine one fine day the folks of Rio and the gauchos of Argentine plains step out, and suddenly realize that Democracy and Freedom have gatecrashed into their country.
