S. Korea military fires at passenger jet by mistake

MOSCOW, June 18

South Korean troops fired at a civilian airplane near the disputed Yellow Sea border with North Korea, misidentifying it as one of the communist country's military planes, but no damage occurred, Yonhap said on Saturday.

Two Marine Corps soldiers guarding the waters off the South's western city of Incheon, fired their K-2 rifles for about 10 minutes at dawn Friday. The plane was later identified as an Asiana Airlines flight.
The aircraft was not damaged as it was about 500 to 600 meters out of the range of the K-2 rifles, Yonhap said citing a military source.
The soldiers claimed the jet was flying north of its normal route, but an official from Asiana Airlines said the plane never deviated from its course.
The report comes amid simmering tensions in the area, with the Yellow Sea maritime border the scene of deadly naval clashes between two Koreas in 1999, 2002 and November 2009.

thats pretty irresponsible of the south korean troops. what would had happened if the plane got hit.

100 passengers were onboard.Good that the plane was out of range of their rifles.

s.korea would be in some hot water if that plane even got scratched. they got lucky. hopefully those soldiers won't be so trigger happy in the future.

this thing happened once.. US shot down iraqi / irani passenger plane. I forgot actually.

Never heard of an incident where a passenger jet was shot down by rifles. :what:

Especially when it was not deviated. .

Asiana Airlines is SK's own airline. My mom took Asiana Airlines before from U.S. back China.

Shooting your own airplane as target???

What were they trying to prove shooting an airborne passenger plane with a rifle ? Even if they landed a few hits there would be no difference in the plane's operational capability, unless they hit one the engines which only the likes of Chuck Norris can accomplish on a very good day.
