S.Korea-Japan islands dispute reaches London Olympics

Japan is seeking intervention from the International Court of Justice regarding the long-running dispute with South Korea over islands in disputed waters.

Known as the Takeshima Islands by Japan and the Dokdo by South Korea, Tokyo has tried to use the international court before.

“South Korea has been working to become a ‘Global Korea’. It must respond to our proposal to International Justice Court of Justice in a responsible manner this time,” said Japan’s Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba.

Timed shortly before the anniversary of the end of Japanese colonial rule, South Korea’s President Lee Myung-bak visited the islands last week – in the first ever trip of its kind by a head of state from either country.

The island dispute has made its way halfway across the globe to the London Olympics. For revealing a poster claiming the territory belongs to his country, South Korean footballer Park Jong-woo, 23, will not be allowed to take part in the bronze medal ceremony after his country beat Japan 2-0.

So impolite.

Just made an observation, it seems that most of time, countries that wants to go to International Court of Justice for disputed territories are those who actually don't have any leverage in those dispute. Too bad for Japan, this reminds me of a 2003 Korean film I saw a while ago "2009 Lost Memories". It was one of the best Korean film out there, it will be interesting to see if the history stays that way protraited throughout most of the film though.

Korea is referred to as Chōsen in Japanese and Choseon in Korean, not as Hanguk (韓&#22283, the name used by Republic of Korea. Seoul is referred to as Gyeongseong (경성,京城; Korean) / Keijō (京城,けいじょう; Japanese), an old name for Seoul that fell out of use after Korea gained independence from Japan in the actual timeline
The Governor General Building still stands in front of Gyeongbok palace (instead of having been demolished in 1996).
Gwanghwamun was never restored (instead of having been restored during Park Chung Hee's presidency).
A statue of Toyotomi Hideyoshi on a horse in full samurai gear stands in downtown Seoul (instead of a statue of Yi Sun-sin, the man credited with defeating him).

If you believe Korean government has more pull than US.

In 1968 200m sprint Gold medallist Tommie Smith and Bronze Medallist John Carlos were suspended from US olympics team and banned from Olympic village by order of IOC for making a political statement during the medal ceremony. When the US Olympic Committee refused, Brundage threatened to ban the entire US track team. This threat led to the two athletes being expelled from the Games.
