Russia will withdraw from the International Space Station (ISS) after reaching its planned lifespan in 2024 and is working on a new station to replace it, Russian media reported on Sunday.

Chinese observers said that Russia's decision to build its own space station is consistent with its self-reliant principle of developing the aerospace industry but it will not overlook the option to cooperate on China's upcoming space station, as the craft might be the only operational station in orbit that will be open to foreign partners following the retirement of the ISS.

Russia announced on Sunday that it will end its participation in the ISS project after the current agreement expires in 2024, according to the Russian Deputy Prime Minister, Yuri Borisov.

He said that the ISS's "condition leaves much to be desired" as a number of technical malfunctions have been mounting, Russian media outlet RT reported on Sunday.

Russian cosmonauts have struggled to fix air leaks over recent years, RT reported, due to cracks appearing in some of the modules in the ISS. The station's first module was launched in 1998 and its lifespan was twice extended, first from 2015 to 2020 and later to 2024.

Vladimir Solovyev, a senior official working on the development of Russia's module of the ISS, said that several elements of the station had been damaged beyond replacement. "After 2025, we predict an avalanche-like failure of numerous elements onboard the ISS," he told the Russian Academy of Sciences, according to local media reports.

The replacement, called Russia Orbital Space Station, or ROSS, will consist of three to seven modules. Solovyev announced last October that it is expected to include a core module, a production module, a logistics cabin, a platform cabin for assembling, launching and repairing, and a commercial cabin that can accommodate four space tourists.

Chinese space experts said that Russia's decision to build its own space station is consistent with its tradition in the aerospace industry and pointed to the country's technical capability as an advanced aerospace pioneer to develop the craft.

However, Wang Ya'nan, Chief Editor of the Aerospace Knowledge magazine, voiced concerns for the project funding, as "Russia has already rolled out ambitious plans in the next few years to carry out lunar exploration and Mars missions," he told the Global Times.

Observers added that while Moscow has decided to do it alone, it has not shut the door for future cooperation on China's upcoming space station that is expected to be operational by 2022.

"There will be a gap for participants on the ISS after its expiration in 2024 and they will seek a new place to send astronauts and projects to. China's space station by that time may be the only one to be operational in orbit and China has shown an open attitude that welcomes the boarding of foreign partners," Wang noted.

In June 2019, the China Manned Space Engineering Office selected the first batch of scientific experiments to be brought onboard China's space station. Projects from 17 countries were approved, including Russia, Belgium, Kenya, Japan, and Saudi Arabia.

Despite Moscow's decision to go ahead alone, Roscosmos has also restated its commitment to welcome international cooperation. In March, it signed a lunar exploration deal with China to jointly build a lunar research station.

This new is significant becos it comfirmed ISS will retired in 2024 and no way to extend it. Russia own the important core. Their withdrawal mean rest of other space agency need to repair the Russian core module themselves if they want to extend it beyond 2024 or pay Russian lots money to maintain it. Russian of course, will take this opportunity to milk them which I dont think other space agency can afford to pay.

There has previously been talks of detaching the Russian part / modules at the end of the ISS life... is it really possible...? If true, those modules could form the core of their new independent space station... That being said, one of the core module of the ISS is the Zarya module... it's Russian built, but bought and paid for by NASA... so technically it's NASA's, but I don't see how NASA can maintain it without the Russians. It's Russian tech after all..

Also Russia is planning on launching the long delayed Nauka module sometime this year, but with them now planning on withdrawing by 2024, it would make no sense to launch and attach it to the ISS only to use it for 3 years... Nauka is a big module, comparable to the Zvezda module (and also to the Tianhe core module)... unless the Russians could (and would) really detach their modules by 2024... It would make more sense to use the Nauka module as the core module of their new Space Station...

Hi @Galactic Penguin SST , you seem to be the expert in space related stuffs around here, what are your thoughts regarding this turn of events..?

The United States and Russia have been cooperating on the International Space Station for so many years, and they have never thought of setting up a space station on their own. It’s very surprising.

Russian has been independent doing their space station like Mir. It is US who yet to demonstrate the capabilities to independently doing a space station on their own. US lack the tech in the late 90s and Russia lack the fund. 2 countries cover each other weakness and you have the ISS.

It is more of US need Russia. Russia going to abandon the ISS in 2024, the US need to pay Russia a big fat cheque to Russia and beg them maintain the Russian ISS core units since Russian has no obligation to pour money to do that beyond 2024.

I will see how the American space station journey going on a dead end. :enjoy:

The days of China isolate US and Japan from China space station is not far. Watch the good show in 2024. Mark this page!

Yes, Russians can go to the Chinese space station to play before their own space station is built. It is said that the interfaces are all compatible.

China and Russia cooperation in space is just natural and an anticipated development.

Nothing new in here.

Since both nations have also agreed to cooperate on the Lunar Moon Base. Other nations may soon joined it as well e.g. Germany.

.
Both Russia and China are decades away from matching US in space technology. Pathfinder was in 1996, China is yet to match that even till today.

Matching US Space technologies???
You mean like USA using parachutes to land its rover onto MARS.

USA technologies are mostly stored away in the Smithsonian Institute.

The question today is:
Can USA repeated all these feats again?

Where have you been for past 20 years? So many wrong info here....

Pathfinder landed a pathetic 10kg mars rover with very limited sensor available while China Mars rover Zhurong that is going to land weight 280kg..

China Mars tech is the most 10 years behind US only. Even the curiosity landed on mars on 2004 is only 185kg. Far less advanced and smaller than our one.

keep dreaming...

One thing that makes Curiosity stand out is its sheer size: Curiosity is about the size of a small SUV. It is 9 feet 10 inches long by 9 feet 1 inch wide (3 m by 2.8 m) and about 7 feet high (2.1 m). It weighs 2,000 lbs. (900 kilograms). Curiosity's wheels have a 20-inch (50.8 cm) diameter.

.
I support cooperation between the two countries. China can support Russia in the space station field, and vice versa Russia can provide Tu-22M and Tu-95 technology to China. This is a win-win agreement

Sorry, for the typo error. It's spirit which operate from 2004 -2010. which makes China Mars rover 10 years behind US still valid. 10 years is not a lot. :enjoy:

yes and yet NASA reached moon 50 years and in 2021 China is still "planning"

stop dreaming about Mars
