IDF says won't 'refer to details' but Ynet reports vessel breached Israel's territorial waters
About three months ago, an Israeli navy missile boat spotted a Russian submarine in a distance of some eight miles off the shore of Israel’s central Gush Dan area, according to a report by Hebrew-language outlet Ynet.
It should be noted that Israel's territorial waters are 12 nautical miles long.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) did not respond to Ynet's question whether there was any damage to state security and did not specify how long the Russian submarine stayed off Israel’s coastline.
According to Ynet, after the submarine was identified, IDF Navy officers interacted with their Russian counterparts, activating the naval coordination mechanism through the General Staff Planning Division. Consequently, the submarine left and sailed west to the Mediterranean.
In the past, a few similar incidents were reported but most of them occurred in international maritime routes. Those incidents ended safely through local coordination with no major risks to the crews, Ynet reported.
The fact that a Russian submarine was present in Israel’s sovereign waters could have long-term implications as President Vladimir Putin’s Russia aims to increase its involvement in the Middle East, and in light of the submarine’s main purpose of collecting intelligence information.
The IDF issued a statement, which read that “from time to time naval targets are discovered by the Navy, which may be perceived as a foreign army vessel. We do not intend to refer to the details put forward in the article.”
