Russian, Pakistani MPs resolve to jointly fight terrorism
* Russia hopes Indo-Pak composite dialogue will resume soon
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: Russian and Pakistani parliamentarians on Wednesday expressed their resolve to jointly combat terrorism and extremism in the region.
During an interactive meeting between members of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and members of Russian Duma at the Parliament House, both sides also agreed to enhance bilateral ties.
Ayaz Amir of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chaired the meeting in the absence of committee chairman Asfandyar Wali Khan, while the Russian delegation was headed by Sergey Pekpeev, member of Dumas foreign affairs committee.
Amir said Pakistan presently faced a number of problems of which extremism and terrorism were the most dangerous, adding that all of Islamabads problems were ramifications of the Afghan war.
Amir said the government was in the process of drafting new policies to address all problems, and hoped that the measures would yield positive results.
Saying Russia was a dominant regional power, he also called for Moscows support for Islamabad to counter terrorism.
Sergey Pekpeev said Russia believed in a strong and prosperous Pakistan and was aware of the problems that the country presently faced.
He said Moscow wanted to enhance bilateral and economic ties with Pakistan and urged frequent interaction of Pakistani and Russian parliamentarians for enhancing relations.
Dialogue: Pekpeev hoped that Pakistan and India would soon take measures to restart composite dialogue, which was aborted after the Mumbai attacks.
Members of the Russian delegation urged enhancing bilateral trade and economic ties, saying Russian entrepreneurs were keen to invest in the energy and mechanical sectors in Pakistan.
