Russian military has 'no one left to draft'

Russia has no conscript-age young men left to recruit, Russia's chief of the General Staff complained on Thursday.

The current conscript service crisis in the Russian Armed Forces is mainly due to demographic decline, bullying and brutal treatment of conscripts.

General Nikolai Makarov said only 11.7% of young men aged 18-27 were eligible for the army service but 60% of them had health problems and could not be drafted under law.

"We now have a situation when there is virtually nobody left to draft," Makarov said. "It is a serious problem and I make no bones about it."

Many young people have been known to fake medical documents or even start a family in order to avoid the 12-month compulsory service in the army.

The crisis in the consript service has led the Defense Ministry to halve the number of conscripts in the autumn 2011 draft period. It will now recruit 135,850 young men instead of 250-300,000, as was planned in spring, the ArmyRus.ru web portal said.

The effect of the 1990s demographic crisis is expected to reach its peak in 2014, experts said.

I guess Russia can do one thing they shold start/open up immigration from the 3rd world countries the same way US, UK,Canada, Australia and Newzealand do . Thats how these countries recieve their man power for everything for Army and civil infrastructure... Russia don't worry we got cure for Ure problems.....

According to his paperwork, "Dmitri" spent several weeks in a psychiatric institution in the Arkhangelsk region in northern Russia and, soon after, he was finally diagnosed with a mild mental illness. He won't say what the diagnosis actually is; the important thing for him is that the general finding is stamped across his identification papers. It prevents him from ever getting a job in the Russian government. But more importantly for Dmitri, that medical certification prevents him from being drafted into the army.

Dmitri (not his real name) paid $2,500 to be certified with his mental illness three years ago. He is just one of thousands of young Russians who have gotten out of military service (or are trying to) as the country comes up to the April 1 beginning of its biggest peacetime draft in history, one that hopes to enlist 305,000 new soldiers.

I guess Russia can do one thing they shold start/open up immigration from the 3rd world countries the same way US, UK,Canada, Australia and Newzealand do . Thats how these countries recieve their man power for everything for Army and civil infrastructure... Russia don't worry we got cure for Ure problems.....

Russia will not do that for several reasons immigration problems is one, they will need skilled immigrants, and the rising xenophobia or foreigners in Russia, Russian Neo Nazi's kill, Behead, etc etc to foreigners.

actually this is a perfect opportunity to milk Russian technology dry. Hire all their scientists give them nationality, benefits etc. and get them to work and teach the young country's population.

Many are all readying leaving to Europe, USA, or Canada depends on who will buy them now Chinese doubt it Europeans doubt it Most likely Third world countries.

Won't be any business if this continues in Russia, the raises the concern other countries will likely draw more proxy battles with Russia like the Georgia conflict.

I remember reading a few months back that they are allowing foreigners to become contract soldiers in the Russian army. I was skeptical that there would be very many people signing up.
