WASHINGTON, January 15 (RIA Novosti) – A possible deal between Russia and Iran securing an oil-for-goods swap could generate sanctions against parties involved in such an agreement, a White House spokesman said Wednesday.

“If the deal moves forward, it would raise serious concerns, as it would be inconsistent with the terms of the P5+1 agreement with Iran and potentially trigger US sanctions against the entities and individuals involved in any such transactions,” spokesman Jay Carney told reporters.

The Reuters news agency last week cited Iranian and Russian sources as saying that the two nations are negotiating a swap that could see Russia buy up to 500,000 barrels of Iranian oil daily in exchange for Russian equipment and goods.

Washington expects that the reported deal would increase Iran’s oil exports, which have been cut by more than half, to about 1 million barrels a day, by sanctions led by the US and European states over Tehran’s nuclear program.

The P5+1 group – comprised of the permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany – clinched a deal with Iran in November to cap Tehran’s nuclear program in exchange for a relaxation of the economic sanctions that have crippled the Iranian economy.

The West fears Iran’s nuclear program could allow it to build a nuclear bomb. Iran says its program is peaceful.

Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak met Wednesday with Mehdi Sanaei, Iran’s ambassador to Russia. Contacted by the Prime news agency, an Energy Ministry spokesman declined to comment on whether bilateral cooperation in the oil sector was discussed.

  • Russia does not need to coordinate with the United States its future plans for increased economic cooperation with Iran, a Russian government source says.
The Kommersant newspaper quoted the unnamed Russian source in its Thursday issue as saying that Russia is entitled to buy “any amounts of oil from Iran.”

“We had once considered the concern of a number of countries over military-technical cooperation with Iran (refusing from the delivery of S-300 missile systems to Tehran), but it’s completely another story and the Americans have nothing to do with it,” the Russian paper quoted the unnamed source as saying.

The source noted that Russia “has no obligation to coordinate such projects with anybody.”

Meanwhile, Viktor Melnikov, who heads the Russian-Iranian Business Council (RIBC) at the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI), said Russia is interested in swapping Iran’s oil with such commodities as “ferrous metal, grain, vegetable oil, mechanical equipment and innovative business products.”

On Wednesday, Iran Ambassador to Moscow Mehdi Sanaee and Russian Minister of Energy Alexander Novak underscored the need for the implementation of agreements they have reached in the energy sector.

Sanaee said Iran’s ministries of oil and energy are ready to facilitate Russia’s investment in Iranian oil and gas sectors and for cooperation between the two countries in oil equipment.

Sanctions on Iran energy sector were imposed based on the unfounded accusation that Iran is pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.

In October last year, Russia's second largest oil company, Lukoil, voiced its interest in participating in Iranian oil and gas projects.

potentially trigger US sanctions against the entities and individuals involved in any such transactions

Meaning; sanctions for Russian companies who gets involved.

So Russia wants to act as a middleman to resell Iranian oil?
Interesting...

Iranians have been $hitting upon their god given wealth like this for a long time,

Here is how it works

Say market price for petroleum is $100 a barrell

Third parties like Venezuela or Russia or China or India use their flag carriers to get the Iranian oil for $40.

Pay Iran with gold or dollars or euoros

and make HUGE profits off of Iran's cheap oil .

Almost 60 dollars a barrel

Who wins?

all the third countries
all the Ayatullahs and Mullah mardoods

Who looses

Iranian common man who has to pay for imports when Iranian Riyal goes for 25,000 to 35,000 for a SINGLE forking dollar.

This is how Iranian wealth is being looted by Islamists and third party countries .

But many of you emotionally challenged people will not understand.

Sad to see

US sanctions warning may only work against other countries .But US show will not work against Russia. That 100% sure.
Even if US complete shutdown their trade with Russia they still can stand with Big power.

Beg to disagree

All Russian money gets cleared from banks controlled by US and allies

This is how they grabbed the necks of Ayatullahs so hard that most of the Mullahs are now 100% constipated, begging for dulcolex

they can use the same method to grab the neck of Putin

Instead of bringing out raw claims out of hot air, provide some proof for what you are saying.
Iran's oil production and exports have decreased significantly, but we are still selling oil with OPEC prices.
You have been repeating the same lie again and again, without saying from where you are getting these ultra-classified information.

Russia is world one of the largest producer of Oil and Natural Gas.They can sustained for long timewith that resources .they will easily buy by China and India.I dont think so US cant do much against Russia
