Russian-Indian strategic partnership gets privileged status
Russia & India have showed the global community a good example of building the inter-state relations. Ten years ago, Moscow and Delhi introduced the term of strategic partnership into the international legal framework.
During President Dmitry Medvedevs visit to India on December 20-11, the Russian-Indian relations turned into an especially privileged strategic partnership.
Visiting the Mausoleum of Taj Mahal, meeting the students and professors of one the leading technical higher educational institutions of India, fruitful talks with the Indian leadership, 30 signed cooperation agreements. The visit of Dmitry Medvedev to India was highly charged just like an Indian movie.
By the way, Medvedev visited Indias largest Bollywood film studio in Mumbai. The Indian dream factory annually produces about 1,000 films. Medvedev talked cooperation with Indian and Russian film makers, watched a film shooting and met the actors of a Russian-Indian TV-series.
The President said that Russians are among the biggest fans of Indian movies. He said that the first Indian film he saw back in early 1970-s was Shree 420.
We know how popular the Indian films are in Russia. I would like to note that Russia may be one of the countries where people are especially fond of the Indian culture. We even have a satellite TV channel, which broadcasts Indian films 24 hours a day.
I think there are no such channels in other countries expect India. The two nations are really interested in each other and we are happy that our relations are developing.
In Mumbai Medvedev also met the students and the professors of the Indian Technological Institute. During one hour about 300 people were asking Medvedev about the Russian-Indian relations, Russias foreign policy, war-on-terror and global security.
A 24 year student Sudeep Nakhe met Medvedevs statement that Russia and India would build up academic exchanges between their universities, with great enthusiasm.
Speaking about the areas of cooperation, Dmitry Medvedev noted that India is especially strong in pharmaceutics and computer technologies. The President was shown a new development in the field of nanotechnologies: detector of explosive substances. Terrorism is a very pressing issue for India.
Medvedevs previous visit there was held several days after a terrible terrorist attack in Mumbai had killed 180 people. On the eve of the recent visit of the Russian President the local security agencies took unprecedented security measures.
In Mumbai Medvedev stressed that Russia is always ready to help India in fighting terrorism.
The Russian-Indian partnership covers many fields including defense and security. We are ready to provide our help to India in these areas and we are already doing it.
Moscow and Delhi have signed 30 agreements on cooperation. In particular, Russia is to build a nuclear power plant in India as well as to supply missiles to the Indian armed forces. Russia and India will jointly develop the fifth generation jet fighter, cooperate in civil aviation sector, carry out space projects and produce equipment for GLONASS navigation system.
Indian specialists will also have an opportunity to take part in Russias Skolkovo innovative project. Besides that Medvedev said that Russia considers India to be a good candidate to join the UNs Security Council.
Both Russian and Indian officials were satisfied with the number and the quality of the new agreements. According to the Indian mass media, Dmitry Medvedevs visit to India has become a milestone in the bilateral relations.
