Russian-Indian JV to develop Brahmos-2 hypersonic missile

The Russian-Indian joint venture Brahmos Aerospace will start developing a new Brahmos-2 hypersonic missile this year, Brahmos Aerospace Director Alexander Maksichev said on Sunday.

"During the year, we are planning to start work on a hypersonic missile, Brahmos-2. This will be a completely new missile,' he said on the sidelines of a conference on the 10th anniversary of the first launch of the Brahmos missile.

Maksichev said the JV intended to start the tests of airborne Brahmos missiles next year.

"We expect to be able to start the tests of Brahmos missiles launched from aircraft. Various types of aircraft, including Su-30 MKI fighters, are expected to be armed with these missiles," he said.

Established in 1998, BrahMos Aerospace Ltd manufactures supersonic cruise missiles based on the Russian-designed NPO Mashinostroyenie 3M55 Yakhont (SS-N-26).

The BrahMos missile has a range of 290 km (180 miles) and can carry a conventional warhead of up to 300 kg (660 lbs). It can effectively engage targets from an altitude as low as 10 meters (30 feet) and has a top speed of Mach 2.8, which is about three times faster than the U.S.-made subsonic Tomahawk cruise missile.

Sea- and ground-launched versions have been successfully tested and put into service with the Indian Army and Navy.

BrahMos II is a hypersonic cruise missile that has been lab tested with a speed of Mach 5.26 that will make it the fastest cruise missile in the world beating Brahmos 1. BrahMos II land variant design has been completed and 4 Land to Land test variants are ready to be tested. Rest of the variants will be tested in the successive years of 2012-13, design is projected to be completed by October 2011 and will arm the Project 15B destroyers of the Indian Navy. In Russian navy project 21956 Destroyers are most likely to be equipped with BrahMos II.

Brahmos 1 already operational. Brahmos -2 will be one of the most deadly and exclusive missile in our Arsnel.

This is great. But our side really needs to do something about the range. Russians cannot help us because of MTCR but I am sure our scientists are now more than capable to consider extending BrahMos-2 range to at least 800-1,000 km like Nirbhay. Without that distance, BrahMos is only effective in western theatre and will not be able to reach targeted military bases in Tibet.

Nirbhay is a long range, subsonic cruise missile being developed in India. The missile will have a range of 1,000 km and will arm three services, the Indian Army, Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force. The Nirbhay will be able to be launched from multiple platforms on land, sea and air. The missile is being developed by the Advanced Systems Laboratory, a division of DRDO and after finalizing the design, the technology required for the missile is being developed. The first test flight of the missile is expected in the year 2012. Nirbhay will be a terrain hugging, stealthy missile capable of delivering 24 different types of warheads depending on mission requirements and will use an inertial navigation system for guidance. Nirbhay will supplement Brahmos in the sense that it would enable delivery of warheads farther than the 300 km range of Brahmos.

We are already developing long range too

It would be very costly and Nirbhay will do the Job. Brahmos is Point to Point with great accuracy. More distance will not serve the purpose. Also, Sukhoi 30 MKI will be equipped with Brahmos - So all Distance will be covered

You can't have the cake and eat it too! Speed has to be sacrificed for range and vice versa. Remember, the longer range American Tomahawk CM has a turbofan propulsion system that consumes much less fuel than the two-stage integrated Rocket/Ramjet of the Brahmos.

Cheers!

A hypersonic missile would have to fly high and would produce very good Infrared signature at the same time a hypersonic cruise missile flying around 30 km altitude would not be detected by ground radars at long ranges.

The brahmos-II even if produces a significant infrared signature wont be such a problem as it will fly at a sustained speed of Mach 5.3 so it would need a SAM of the comparable speed to even tackle it and so its very tough and brahmos is very maneuverable.secondly brahmos-2 would fly at a much lower altitude than 30KM as a cruise never leaves the atmosphere so it will have terrain hugging stealth features

According to Brahmos CEO S Pillai works on Brahmos-2 started way back and they are conducting lab tests!

Their is very little chance of Nuclear war between any country (cold war is an example)

So a pin point accurate missile with supersonic speed is really a game changer in any war

Assuming that Brahmos-II weighs 3.5tons and a velocity of mach 5.4 (1500 m/s) produces a kinetic energy of 79 GigaJoules which coupled with the energy of the explosives is enough fry anything it hits and because of the unbeatable kinematic performance it will have a much higher kill radius compared to other cruise missiles of the same range.
