It's a morally defeating move by the highly incompetent Russian Army but most certainly not a strategic loss for them. It's called tactical retreat, still hoping the best for Ukraine.

It really kind of depends on Russian strategic goal.

If they wanted Odessa, then losing snake island is a strategic loss, because without snake island and ship being push back further out in the ocean, Russia no longer control the airspace around Odessa, making assault in Odessa virtually impossible (They can try but it will not look good without air support coming from the sea)

If the Russian just focus in the East, then yes, losing snake island is not a strategic loss.

As a gesture of goodwill" Ukraine sent 50 tons of high explosive to the Russian Invaders on the island to help them leave.

It was hell on earth for the past 3 days there for the poor Russians

It’s a huge defeat. The island is the cornerstone of Putin’s hunger game. Ukraine grain exports can be now resumed.
