ISLAMABAD: The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Viktorovich Lavrov, will be in Islamabad on a two-day visit for bilateral consultations from October 3 at the time when the Army Chief General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani will be visiting Moscow.

The Russian Foreign Minister is visiting Islamabad when the Russian President Vladimir Putin’s cancelled visit still a hot issue at home.
The Russian President Vladimir Putin had cancelled his scheduled visit to Islamabad, forcing postponement of a quadrilateral summit involving Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Afghanistan planned for October 2-3.

The Russian Foreign Minister is visiting Pakistan on the invitation of Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar extended during her last visit to Moscow in February this year.

Pakistan and Russia enjoy an excellent relationship based on mutuality of interest in enhancing greater bilateral cooperation and convergence of views on various important regional and international issues. The two countries also share the common objective of peace and stability in the broader region and attach importance to regional connectivity both in terms of trade and energy cooperation.

Recently, the two countries also held their Second Inter-Governmental Commission (IGC) on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation in Islamabad and discussed concrete proposals on various areas of cooperation including Energy, Industries and Production, Bilateral Trade and Investment, Scientific and Technical Cooperation, Agriculture. The forthcoming visit of Foreign Minister Lavrov would provide an opportunity to further expand and intensify the existing mutually beneficial bilateral ties. During his stay in Islamabad besides holding bilateral consultations, Foreign Minister Lavrov is also scheduled to call on the President and the Prime Minister.

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar on Thursday said that every Pakistani wanted the country’s relations with Russia to be strengthened, adding that, Pakistan and Russia were renewing their ties, DawnNews reported.
Addressing a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Khar said she hoped that the Pakistani and Russian heads of state would soon meet.
Khar said she and the Russian foreign minister held talks on regional and global challenges confronting both countries.
“The Russian foreign minister’s visit is significant for the prospects of regional peace and security,” Khar said.
She further said that in the past, Russia had played a significant role in Pakistan’s development.
Speaking at the press conference, Lavrov said the ties between Pakistan and Russia were crucial in the light of the current regional and global situation.
Lavrov said the two countries had agreed on increasing cooperation in several areas, including the political and economic sectors.
Lavrov had arrived in Islamabad on Wednesday evening on a two-day visit. He is also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf.
Lavrov was invited by Khar earlier this year, but dates for his trip had to be pulled up after Putin opted against travelling to Islamabad for bilateral meetings and a quadrilateral summit on Afghanistan.
Lavrov’s visit comes as Army Chief Gen Ashfaq Pervez Kayani flew to Russia for consolidating progress in defence cooperation.
Kayani would be holding discussions with Russian leaders on furthering bilateral cooperation, particularly in the field of defence.
Visits of officials from the two countries may help in consolidating a relationship but in the world of diplomacy long-term convergences sustain ties.
Russia and Pakistan have convergence of views on Afghanistan, regional stability and counter-narcotics efforts. Russia additionally sees Pakistan as a country playing an important role in countering terrorism and achievement of its vision of regional connectivity.

Pakistan should make the most out of this opportunity & give the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project to Russia

Wouldn't Russian be more interested in getting TAPI online? Its within their strategic sphere of influence. Btw, with the rate at which the Iranian currency is falling, any re-negotiations expected?
