There are different voice in Russia about Vietnam. Russia is a complex country, where there are nationalists, terrorists and facists (Neo-Nazi) existing. The Ukraine crisis is a major geopolitical fight between US (which seeks total world domination) and Russia (only true military rival to the US) where the US wants to eliminate Russia as a counterbalance to the US.

Pro-Russian Ukrainian government was topple by US-backed terrorists in Maidan and installed a group of pro-Western fascist thugs and the East of Ukraine that don't like what is happening in Kiev is fighting against that. The new Kiev regime wants to silence the protestors. The new Kiev regime wants to join NATO to contain Russia.

This is all about Ukraine joining NATO. The rest of the things that happen are just subplots.
