Russian battalion was alerted and immediately moved to the assigned area. Artillery crews overcame simulated contaminated areas and repelled attacks of simulated sabotage groups.
Having arrived at the assigned area, the artillerymen met qualification standards in deploying 2S4 Tulpan self-propelled mortars. The mortar crews practiced engaging simulated enemy at different distances and changing positions and avoiding fire in response.
The 2S4 Tyulpan (Tulip) self-propelled mortar was developed in the late 1960s. The first prototype was completed in 1969. It was accepted to service with the Soviet Army in 1971. Around 400 of these vehicles were built. It saw action in Afghanistan, Chechnya and Ukraine.
The 2S4 is capable of firing laser-guided munitions. Some sources claim, that Tyulpan is also capable of firing mines with nuclear warheads.
