Russia warns of new wave of terror, seeks India's cooperation

As Nato forces prepare to exit Afghanistan in 2014, Russia on Sunday warned of a "new wave" of terrorism in the region, including against India and sought cooperation with New Delhi to stop this "invasion".

Sharing Russia's serious concerns on the evolving situation in Afghanistan
after the departure of Nato troops in 2014, visiting deputy prime minister Dmitry Rogozin said once the foreign troops leave the country, thousands of terrorists and fundamentalists will take shelter there.

"Thousands of terrorists and fundamentalists will seek refuge in Afghanistan as well as the region around the country. It may change the situation drastically around the region and for countries like Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Central Asia. This is a big problem for Russia and India," he said.

"So we have to control the situation with some political and security monitoring and see what we can do together to stop this invasion of new terrorist wave against us and our citizens," he said.

He said that Nato was not claiming victory in Afghanistan but just success.

"There could be a new terrorist wave against us. The end of the ISAF operations in Afghanistan should be the start of a new cooperation against terrorism and extremism," Rogozin said while accusing the West of not doing anything to help the Afghan people during their stay in the country.

US President Barack Obama has already confirmed that most of the 90,000 American troops in Afghanistan will withdraw by 2014 when Afghan security personnel will take charge of the nation's defence.

If ever afghan Taliban takes over after 2014 NATO exist,It wont fare well for Russia,India,China and to an extent,Iran..We dont want fresh batches of jihadis trained in afghanistan causing troubles in Chechnia,Xinjiang and Kashmir..

As i said , Russia shares India's , Iran's and the West's concerns on Afghanistan .

They don't want the Chechen extremists to stage a comeback in Russia , not that they are inactive now .

Seems that Russia is trying to appease India, while trying to maintain some sort of ties with Pakistan post-NATO'Stan. Whatever the dPM may say, India shares no borders with Central Asia and will not share a 'pincer' relationship with India in regards to Pakistan as India swings more and more towards the United States, in terms of both defence and economic ties... which will only lead to India not being able to fully back Russia in a diplomatic spat with the United States.

India will act as the bridge or stay out . We don't have to back anyone.

Thts why all the diplomates in dehli were crying when gen.kiyani was in russia?
Wht bridge india can become between china pakistan afghanistan & iran?
Nothing!
Russia has more on stake with china , thn of india & if china is ready to form a strategic allience with the given countries russia must hve to follow, its up to india to join it or keep sleeping.

Guys, Pakistan is regularly hit by these terrorists. The situation is open. And you want to comment on Indian diplomats ?

This terror problem will affect you the most. Reason being :

You were ally of NATO and allowed the supply. After 2014, the main focus will become Pakistan as you were accessory to the invasion. TTP is just a start. Many terrorists organization will emerge. They will attack you for going against them.

So its up to Pakistan Foreign Policy makers to prepare a solid plan to counter the emergence of fundamentalists.

So guys, try to understand the problem which is matter of concern for both the countries and instead of taking shots on India.

And if you think Pakistan can defeat these group which hasn't been defeated by NATO itself, then good look for over-estimating your power.

Only way you can counter is forgetting differences and work together for removing these terrorists.

It will be back where it all started ANA fighting Taliban, ANA supported by Russia, India, Iran and yes even China will ensure help to Afghanistan , plenty of East Turkistani militants were hiding out in Afghanistan until the Americans killed them, So China cannot afford to have that again. Russian presence in Central Asia is good, Iranian Influence is also welcomed however due to the Sunni-Shia Saudi Arabia and the UAE fund groups to try and roll back Iranian influence not just in the ME but Central Asia.

There are too much at stakes here on stability of Afghanistan. Billions of dollars worth investment and strategic importance. All the big players present in Afghanistan knows the urgency of contingency plan to tackle terrorists who will thrive post-2014.

These extremist groups are not good for anyone. No one will get benefit from it.

Indeed but let's not forgot Central Asia which is vital the two countries that need support Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan is a poor country and has a terror movement that gets funded by private individuals from the Gulf States and Uzbek Militants hide in Afghanistan. I have Uzbek Friend in the UK now left due to the extremism. It's either a stable and rich Central Asia and Afghanistan or terror base that cause instability for Russia, India, Iran, Pakistan and China.

Looks like we are going to have to tighten our border controls to Central Asia.
Yup. But we need more than that. Even US can't stop illegal immigrants in its region, how will any country can stop these terrorists to cross over due to terrain and geography of the region ?

We have to be proactive rather than reactive. We need a system, like UN Peacekeeping force to weed out these terrorists. We can't remove them in few years, we need constant operation for at least a decade and at the same time educating and providing job to the locals in the companies and mines were we have invested.

ll nations should be on one side against these extremists and work cooperatively.

That is the main priority of the SCO. Not just energy security, but also border security and anti-terrorism in the Central Asian region.

One good thing for us, is that even if some Central Asian militants do manage to infiltrate over, they will find it extremely hard to blend in to Chinese society.

Not in Xinjiang, the Afghan China border is closed off and the mountainous terrain makes it difficult but the borders with Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan need to be tightly controlled remember there are also Tajiks, Kazakhs, and Kyrgyz that live in xinjiang so groups that operate in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan should be watched.

Our relationship with Russia is not the issue here, but the common threat faced by The major asian powers if afghan taliban returns to power,Which are based on..
1.Indian,Chinese and to an extend russian interests in stability of modern afghanistan and thereby the protection of billions of dollars invested there.

2.More importantly, the issue of terrorism..Afghan taliban used to host terrorists from Chechnia,Xinjiang and kashmiri jihadists. Many are killed by NATO

Turkistan Islamic Party identifies senior leader killed in Afghanistan - The Long War Journal

US airstrike killed 15 Turkistan Islamic Party fighters in Afghanistan - The Long War Journal

But once NATO leaves and if ever Afghan taliban takes over,All these terrorists will be having safe haven in afghanistan..Although a major cause of concern for India and China, threat to russia is even greater.
