Russia wants West Bengal nuclear plant relocated

The government is looking at allotting another site for nuclear reactor to Russia in place of Haripur in West Bengal, a location marred by controversy. Confirming that the Russians have officially sought another site, government sources indicated a new site could be allotted soon.

The Mamta Banerjee-led government in the state announced last month that it was going to scrap the project, but it did not prevent Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from making a strong case for nuclear energy when he visited Kolkata later.

"There is no decision yet but we are looking at the request from the Russians. We can allot another site to them," said a senior government source. The Russians have been expressing concern about protests in Haripur since last year, but the government was still hopeful of a way out. With Mamata's regime not relenting, the Centre has been forced to think of other alternative sites.

West Bengal power minister said in the assembly last month that the government would not allow any nuclear power plant to be set up in the state. Russia's state-owned nuclear power equipment and service giant Rosatom had asked the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) to consider allotting it another site for the plant.

The coastal region of Haripur had been allotted by the Centre to Russia because of its low population density. The proposed plant had acquired all necessary environmental clearances in January, 2010. Haripur was said to have the potential for six reactor units. It had been earmarked initially for two 1,000mw power plants and the construction work was to commence this year.

However, after the protests led by Trinamool Congress started to gain momentum last year even then state's ruling party CPM tried to distance itself from the project dubbing it was Centre's brainchild.

Rosatom chief Sergei Kiriyenko had earlier said that a total of 12 nuclear power units were to be built at Kudankulam and Haripur. Haripur was said to be an important part of the Centre's plans for achieving its target of generating 30,000MW of nuclear power by 2030.

Politics and deception are friends for ever ....here is an example....never mind....

i feel sad for particular state resident, whenever govt or private firm try to do something there. They have very hard time to do it. If i am not wrong Tatas planned something there too then it was scraped... I am really impressed by Gujrat state administration last year we went there. They are very friendly for investors and process things very fast there bureaucracy is less...
I think it will very soon overtake other Indian states in terms of development...

I still curse her for shamelessly using the Singur issue just for political mileage. Now I read that she is inviting the Tata's to invest again! Heights of shamelessness :hitwall:

I heard the TATA plant was almost finished but they decided to give it up because of the constant protests by TMC and now the land is unusable for agriculture as concrete was poured over it.

Kolkata is at best 10 years behind Delhi in terms of infra. etc.

Feel sad at what is being dished out to the intellectually rich Bengalis.

Seriously why don't these guys understand that a nuclear plant means electricity. Electricity means industry. Industry means jobs. Jobs mean money and development.

...or they want to till lands and 'enjoy' African levels of poverty forever?

Why don't they understand that development needs industry and industry needs land!

At this pace, states like Bangal and Orissa will lagging behind while other states move ahead.

Both Keralites and Bengalis consider themselves to be intellectually superior but constantly elect leaders whose only expertise is to "Throw baby out with the bathwater".

Well, though I am not a communist follower but still Mr Budhyadeb was the best CM our state ever has got.Even his adversaries had to call him 'uncorruptible'.Despite of being a communist,he tried to open the economy of WB and invited private majors to invest in our state even against his own party(which is definately an outdated system) to clean up that mess of Jyoty Bose's rule which almost destroyed our economy. But our beloved f**king didi ruined every thing. And the most horrible part is that she is our CM now.GOD held WB.
