Russia to set up arms production facility in India

Russia is looking to set up a licensed production facility for tanks and rocket artillery ammunitions in India, a longstanding defense partner.


Speaking at a Defense Show on Machine-Building Technologies in Moscow, Russia’s defense exporter Rosoboroexport indicated that Russia was set to build a facility in India to manufacture missiles for the Smerch multi-barrel mobile rocket launchers.


In addition, Russia will deliver $1 billion worth of ammunition, including tank and artillery shells, to India this year. Among the many deliveries expected this year, the transfer of the refurbished Vikramaditya aircraft carrier to India by end of 2012 will be the top project worth $ 2.34 billion.

I think part of the reason why the US is warming up to India is India's symbiotic relationship with Russia and Russian industries.
