India has approached Russia to partner it on certain critical technologies for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). Top sources tell SP’s that the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) has asked Russia for assistance in developing thrust vectoring and certain other technologies on the concept fifth generation jet platform. There has been steady progress in the programme following the basic design freeze.

The ADA has opened discussions with turbofan houses in the US, Russia and Europe for what it believes need to be 110 kN engines in twin configuration for the AMCA. The engines will specifically need to support supercruise. The ADA has indicated to engine manufacturers that modifications could potentially be a joint effort in country, involving the DRDO and other agencies if necessary.

Either way, the ADA has ambitiously aimed at producing up to four prototypes, with the first rolling out in 2019. As the ADA recently set down as the aircraft’s profile and definition, “The AMCA is being designed as a stealth, medium weight, twin engine, multimission aircraft with a swing-role capability.

Among the advanced technologies that confer stealth capabilities are serpentine air intakes, internal weapons bays, radar absorbing structure (RAS), radar absorbing materials (RAM), frequency selective surface radome and conformal air data probes. The avionics system features integrated modular architecture supporting NCW capabilities, advanced pilot-vehicle interface, pilot associate and integrated vehicle health management. The integrated flight and propulsion control system will combine the traditional flight control functions with thrust vectoring and engine control functions.”

To have same countries as partners in two projects would be foolish. We should have asked Israel to join us as major tech partners. Anyway it is funded by us. If we offer them a good deal, we would have obtained critical tech help from them.

Plus we would have had a diverse platform.

We seek the help of people who know more than us. Israel has no experience with developing 5th gen technologies, or thrust vectoring. Russia does.

The article doesn't say that, but that we have asked the Russians for joint tech developments, like TVC. That's actually would be a refreshing new attempt to deal with our shortfalls, but highly unlikely that we can fit a Russian TVC system on a US engine right? And with DRDO's habit to ignore the Russians, IRDW might be making things up.

@sancho What About Advanced Sensor Fusion Systems & DAS How Can we Develop that Any Guess

But this is a new approach and it seems it is a good approach.
ADA knows they cant develop the engine .Simply we dont have the capacity to do that.I think ADA will seek more help from Russians .We cant trust the Americans blindly .So their participation may end in joint development of engine and we will carry out the rest with others help or indigenously.

. . .
We will most probably use the himalya system(ew of pakfa) or its derivative.
But i prefer western Why not Spectra If MMrca goes Through Its Equal Match to Himalya

We already have developed considerble knowhow with EW systems and sensors, the access to Israeli or European partners helped here too. The upgraded MKI will be the next big push in that regard, adding more advanced passive sensors to it and that will be the base to develop things further for FGFA and AMCA if necessary.

1)We are not partners in mmrca/rafale deal.
2)Spectra is not a sensor fusion suite but a passive radar detector cum frequency manipulator to fool the enemy radar and cloak the rafale to make it difficult to find.
3)Russians too have their own passive systems though may not be as advanced.
4)I am only speculating by the way on himalya, who knows what we will prefer:D

Most probably israeli/russian systems.

Tell that DRDO, their blind faith in the US caused a lot of trouble for LCA and now they test AMCA windtunnel models in the US, aim on US engines.
It might end on the engine, which however will limit the Russian contribution of TVC too, but the US companies might offer partnerships on the fighter itself too. In S. Korea Boeing offered a team up based on the F18SH and basing AMCA on that + GE 414 engines, would actually be a great chance for a naval NG carrier fighter. But sadly DRDO is too limited in planing and project management, besides that US government approval for such a development might be rejected.

Well India Should Find Better EOTS (electro-optical targeting system) and DAS (distributed aperture system).for Amca i HOPE:(

We won't get THE eots/das but a comparable system for sure.

Israeli yes, Russian not really, there is not much Russian left in the EWS of MKI.

The main radar and irst/tv view and laser range finder are all russian.
Plus the biggest upgrades of super mki, aesa and upgraded irst with possible newer engine will be russian.
