Russia orders improved Mi-28NM attack helicopters

The Ministry of Defence of Russia has ordered a two improved variant of Mi-28NM attack helicopters, the Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper reported on 17 December.

The Ministry of Defence of Russia signed a contract with holding company “Russian Helicopters”, a subsidiary of the Rostec state corporation, for the production of an installation batch of new Mi-28NM helicopters.

“Russian Helicopters” will deliver first 2 Mi-28NM helicopters in 2018, under the terms of a contract awarded to the company.

The Mil Mi-28NM is an upgraded version of the Mi-28NE Night Hunter attack helicopter. The helicopter features a 360-degree radar and advanced weapons guidance system that ensure faster target acquisition through an upgrade to the Mi-28NM’s fire control system.

Unlike its predecessor, the Mi-28NM can be piloted by the gunner and is better suited for the use of high-precision ordnance.

“Innovative technology and solutions implemented in the design of that (Mi-28NM) helicopter not only improved its characteristics, but also made the Mi-28NM an almost perfect combat vehicle,” Russian Helicopters CEO Alexander Mikheev said.

As Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov said, this helicopter will be main attack helicopter of Russian Armed forces in next 10 years.

Yury Borisov expressed hope that the upgraded Mi-28NM will make a significant contribution to improving the combat capabilities of the Russian Defence Ministry’s army aviation.
