Russia open to arming Indian Rafale

While the Indian Air Force (IAF) sets its highest hopes on the MMRCA contract being signed this financial year amidst receding chances, Russia, maker of one of the five defeated aircraft in the competition, has said it would be willing to integrate Russian weapons on the Rafale if India so desires. Russia’s largest guided weapons house, Korporatsia Takticheskogo Raketnogo Vooruzheniya’s (KTBP) Chief Boris Obnosov.

At the recent MAKS 2013 show in Zhukovsky, Obnosov is quoted by the Russian Embassy’s Russia and India Report to have said, “These include long, medium- and short-range air-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles, guided aviation bombs and a large spectrum of submarine weapons. By their performance characteristics they are as good as if not better than best Western analogues.” While the 18 flyaway aircraft being contracted will come integrated with standard issue weapons build by MBDA and Sagem, the MMRCA tender makes it compulsory for the platform to be capable of taking on missiles specific by the Indian Air Force as well. Sources inform SP’s that the IAF hasn’t finalised its weapons fit for the Rafale on this option in question.

Well India would definitely go for this option. My guess is Brahmos would be one of the missiles India can select for Rafale.

Nope, because that's only just another manufacturer that hopes to make some money out of MMRCA, although their fighters were rejected. We heared the same from the US as well, that would offer HARM, JSOW, or their AAMs, but none of this is realistic, especially not the Russians weapons. IAF already have enough platforms to use the current stock and searches specifically for alternatives to them, instead of integrating them to other western fighters too.
How many Russian weapons were integrated to Jags and M2K, why isn't a single Russian weapon ordered for the M2K upgrade? The only weapon that might have a chance in future is Brahmos mini, as an alternative to French anti ship and land attack missiles, but other than that Russian weapons will have no chance.
If at all, IAF will follow the M2K upgrade weapon pack and might add Israeli PGMs to Rafale too, since the weapon pack of M2K and Rafale are similar.

Theres a saying in hindi Bhaagtey Bhoot ki Langoti hee Sahi roughly translated collect whatever is left behind. Russians after having lost MMRCA would want some kind of business opportunity that will come from this gigantic deal and hence the statement. Would be interesting to see what they offer and how the system is integrated. French industry on the other hand (looking to sell there systems) won't be amused.

Will the initial contract includes the weapon package ? MICA or METEOR ?

How do you guys perceive Rafale VS Su35?
SU 35 is way batter than rafale as the latest plane which russia is offering to inddia consist of the almost all the techs it proposes on the FGFA and that inclueds latest ASEA , better engines with far far better oprational life in terms of power /feul economy and service intervels + a much better/lower RCS and latest EW suite

Weapons will be ordered in seperate contracts, see M2K upgrade and later MICA deal, which might even include a bigger number for the early Rafales too. METEOR will be integrated into Rafale only for the F3R coming in 2018, we can fund early integration if we want, but with the delays of the competition, we might compromise on MICA first and order METEOR only for the later Rafales, produced in India.

But,For M2K it is an upgrade.Never heard about separate contract for MKI or jaguar.

The upgrade only include overhaul, new techs or the integration of weapons, not an order of weapons. Brahmos for example will be integrated to the upgraded MKIs, but there need to be a seperate order of IAF for the air launched Brahmos. Similarly the cluster bombs that we have procured are at least estimated to be used on the upgraded Jags, but were a seperate order too, just like IAF have to order Kh35 soon (if they didn't order it already) for Mig 29UPG, since it's not available for any IAF fighter today.
