Russia objects to India plans to sell BrahMos missiles

On the BrahMos issue. I read somehwere that if you gave a batch of BrahMos's to Iran, it could effectively shut down the entire Straights of Hormuz. no ship would pass through.

BTW Bull, MRTA is already decided. 5th gen isnt. Will be decided with Presudent Putin when he comes. I have a new article on the 5th gen. Will post it in the old thread.

India, Russia have identified countries for BrahMos sale

Dismissing as without any "basis" reports of Moscow's reservations on export of Brahmos missiles, top officials today said joint venture partners India and Russia have identified countries to whom it can be sold.

"There is nothing official about it," A Dergachev Alexander, Chairman, Board of Directors of BrahMos, told reporters here.

"There is no basis for the reports," Alexander said.

He said a supervisory committee comprising representatives from governments of Russia and India have already finalised a list of "friendly countries" to whom the 290 km-range supersonic missiles can be sold.

"The inter-government agreement on BrahMos stipulates that the missiles will be sold to friendly nations," G Leonov Alexander, Designer General of BrahMos said.

The Indo-Russian venture aims to sell about 1,000 missiles in the "near future" to clients in India, Russia and some friendly countries.

"There is a market for at least 2,000 supersonic cruise missiles," BrahMos Chief Executive Officer A Sivathanu Pillai said adding that the market could be even bigger than analysed as many missiles currently in use were becoming outdated.

Colonel-General Anatoly Mazurkevich, who heads the international cooperation department of the Russian defence ministry, had said in Moscow on Sunday that Moscow was not keen to export the weapon as it was "highly lethal for potential enemies".

'Russia not opposed to sale of BrahMos to specific countries'

BANGALORE, JAN 23 (PTI)

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov indicated today that Moscow would not oppose sale of BrahMos cruise missile, jointly developed by Russia and India, to some specific countries.

"Russia has nothing to do with putting obstacles towards sale of BrahMos missiles to some specific third countries," Ivanov, who holds the rank of Deputy Prime Minister in the Russian cabinet and is widely tipped to succeed President Vladimir Putin early next year, told a press conference here.

His comments are seen as significant as only last week a top Russian defence official, Colonel-General Anatoly Mazurkevich, said Moscow was not keen on its export to other countries, describing the missile as "highly lethal" and capable of upsetting the balance of forces in any region where they may appear.

Mazurkevich had said: "India is one thing, she is our strategic partner and poses no military threat to Russia, but we are not keen on giving it to other countries, be it China or any other friendly nation".

Ivanov said there has been no change in the Russian position vis-a-vis BrahMos missiles. "We have discussed the issue with the Indian party," he said.http://www.outlookindia.com/pti_news.asp?id=445657

Same thing. So that confirms, the missiles will be exported.

And comming soon he will deny above mentioned:partay: .

IAm not to sure but these russian guys sounds like pakistani politicians

They already have the Sunburn:lol: No need to give them.

Awsum!

But BrahMos is far better than the Sunburn, i would rather have Iran armed with BrahMos. It could have been easily exported to Iran, but the problem is that India's oil comes from the Straights of Hormuz, in the tankers. And Iran would practically shut that route down, hurting India badly. so they are not keen on it.
But i do hope that Iran gets these missiles.

Russia to help India test supersonic cruise missile

24/01/2007 11:45 NEW DELHI, January 24 (RIA Novosti) - The Sukhoi Design Bureau will assist India in testing an air-to-ground version of the Brahmos cruise missile, a RIA Novosti correspondent said Wednesday.

Russia and India established in 1998 a joint venture, BrahMos Aerospace, to design, develop, produce and market a supersonic cruise missile. Sea-based and land-based versions of the missile have been successfully tested and put into service with the Indian Army and Navy.

The company is currently working on the development of an airborne version of the missile, which could be installed on the Sukhoi-30MKI air-superiority fighters of the Indian Air Force.

The Brahmos missile, named after India's Brahmaputra River and Russia's Moscow River, has a range of 180 miles and can carry a conventional warhead of up to 660 pounds. It can hit ground targets flying at an altitude as low as 10 meters (30 feet) and at a speed of Mach 2.8.

A BrahMos Aerospace official said last year that the company planned to make 1,000 missiles over the next 10 years and sell half of them to third countries.

During the sixth meeting of the Russian-Indian intergovernmental commission on military-technical cooperation in the Indian capital on Wednesday, the sides agreed to increase the production capacity of the joint enterprise in order to satisfy the growing demand for this type of weaponry.

In 2000, Russia and India signed a 10-year program on military-technical cooperation, which currently lists about 130 R&D and production projects.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov, who is a co-chairman of the joint commission, Wednesday called for the development of a draft cooperation program beyond 2010.

"Joint projects in the sphere of military-technical cooperation between Russia and India show a gradual transition from 'seller-buyer' relations to scientific-production cooperation," said Ivanov, who is also Russia's deputy prime minister.

GoI sure is trying hard to get brahmos inducted in all three arms of our defence.I hope they diversify and try to develop some subsonic missiles too.

.
India is also developing a Sub launched version. That would be awsome when its ready.

Work has begun on a variant of the Indo-Russian BrahMos missile system that would, in the next few years, make India the only country with a submarine-launched supersonic cruise missile capability.

BrahMos, a joint venture between DRDO and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyenia, has asked the Navy to spare one of its Russian-made Kilo-class submarines as a test platform for the new missile. The request is likely to be shortly addressed. The missile is concurrently being configured for Russia’s Amur-class submarines — boats that will compete for a second-line of submarine construction at Mazagon Docks parallel to the French Scorpene line.

“The missile will be identical in all respects to the vertically launched land or ship launched version. The only modification will be the installation of a 7.65 metre thick cylindrical module to the submarine structure to house the missiles and fire control system,” BrahMos CEO A Sivathanu Pillai told The Indian Express today on a tour of the company’s facility in New Delhi.

The 290 km anti-ship and land attack missile is currently operational in the ship-launched profile on the Navy’s INS Rajput destroyer and shore-based vehicle launched variants. The Army is to induct the missiles this year in multiple regiments. The air-launched version to begin preliminary tests this year, culminating in flight tests from an IAF Su-30MKI fighter next year.

The BrahMos is also likely to create history by becoming the first missile export from India—¿ the Malaysian Navy has expressed a keen interest in the system and is likely to formalise an order during the year. “We expect a bigger market than we analysed initially. We will export in the near future to a few friendly countries. We expect a total of 1,000 missiles to meet the demand of India, Russia and these countries in the foreseeable future. Demand for anti-ship missiles is high,” Dr G Leonov Alexander, first deputy Director General of NPO Mashinostroyenia, said.

BrahMos has also set up a team to study the parameters of a parallel programme to create technologies over and above the missile’s current capabilities. “Competition will come, and we have to think of a parallel extension programme to maintain leadership. We have started joint study groups to arrive at the specifics of such an effort,” Pillai said. The three-new Talwar-class frigates on order from Russia, the three Delhi-class destroyers and Godavari-class frigates will soon be fitted with the BrahMos system.

India and Russia to develop hypersonic missiles

Josy Joseph

NEW DELHI: The Indo-Russian Inter-governmental Commission on Military Technical Cooperation, chaired by the defence ministers of the two countries on Wednesday, cleared the development of a hypersonic cruise missile that can fly anywhere between five to seven times the speed of sound.

The two sides also signed a latter of intent on jointly developing a multi-role transport aircraft, and decided to further explore joint development of the fifth generation fighters based on a Sukhoi design.

The hypersonic missile would be the second stage of BrahMos, the joint venture supersonic cruise missile, that already is a huge success and is one of its kind in the world.

Russian defence minister Sergei Ivanov said the two sides have given clearance for the production of the “cruise missile of next generation” under the BrahMos joint venture. But what he didn’t say was that the next phase would be an ambitious project that would challenge the scientific abilities of the military scientists of the two countries.

With a speed between five and seven times sound, sources said the hypersonic cruise missile would be a “dream jump.” Already an imaginary drawing of such a missile exists with the BrahMos Aerospace. The proposed speed and precision of the next generation BrahMos would make it more difficult to develop an effective anti-missile system for adversaries.

Calling BrahMos a “successful chapter” in Indo-Russian defence relations, AK Antony said he “would like to see more such ventures in future.” The two sides signed a letter of intent on the development of a multi-role transport aircraft and for the licensed production of RD-33 engines for the MIG-29 fighters, which would be manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd.

Russia made a strong pitch for the 126 Multi Role Combat Aircraft deal of the IAF offering its MiG-35 fighters. On India participating in the fifth generation fighter project of Russia, Ivanov said, “We can now open up contractual work for Indian accession to the project.”

With ordinary guidence systems imho, these missiles can in no way be sufficiently accurate to be of any use. I thing the glosnass sytem will be playing a big role in the navigation and guidence of these supersonic/hypersonic missiles. And with chinese aquiring ASAT capabilities, india needs to look for anti-ASAT systems to protect its navigational satellites.

.
Its far simpler to have an ASAT itself. So China knows, that if it harms Indian Sats, then India would do the same. Its the problem with our defensive mindset. Why should we spend billions of dollars to develop Anti-ASAT. US tried that unsuccessfully in the past for protection against Russia, dint work, pumped $hit loads of money in it. India should just develop an ASAT. We should be agressive in this approach.

.
I have been reading up on the whole sea skimming missile thing recently and have come to the conclusion that it is not as big a threat to prepared military vessels as once thought. Missiles such as the Yakhont and the Brahmos are designed to be volley fired rather then in penny packets.
A ship on it's own would be in trouble however a ship with E-2 coverage reduces this danger greatly (puts the purchase of the P-3 with E-2 radar into perspective huh?)
The high speed of missiles such as this one have a tendency to give of huge amounts of heat and thus are vulnerable to IR missiles. Also there are close defence upgrades out there.
The guidance system on the original non Glasnoss version limits the missile. And the Glassnoss variant will have limited sales potential.
