Russia’s MiG has signed an agreement with Kazakh firm Kazakhstan Engineering to help promote the MiG-35 ‘Fulcrum-F’ to the Kazakh government, alongside a number of potential workshare and offset agreements.

The agreements were signed at the 2017 MAKS Air Show in Russia on 19 July between MiG Aircraft Corporation’s Director General Ilya Tarasenko and Kazakhstan Engineering’s Acting Chairman Vadim Shakshakbayev.

In addition to the marketing agreement, the two organisations agreed to establish servicing and production centres in Kazakhstan.

In comments reported by Russian news agency ITAR-TASS, Tarasenko said that the two companies were to create a taskforce that would draft a co-operation roadmap to enable the creation of a service centre in Kazakhstan. The roadmap is expected to be ready in the coming months.

Should the aircraft be successful in entering Kazakh service, the Kazakhstan Engineering subsidiaries would also be undertaking some of the production work on the aircraft and components. However, further details were not disclosed.

Kazakhstan has undergone a degree of modernisation of its Soviet-era combat aircraft inventory, which include MiG-27 ‘Flogger’, MiG-31 ‘Foxhound’, and MiG-29 ‘Fulcrum’ aircraft. In 2015, the country began to procure Su-30SM ‘Flanker’ aircraft, with a total of 32 aircraft expected to be delivered by 2020. While procurements still feature a number of Russian platforms, manufacturers such as Airbus have been able to penetrate the market with aircraft such as the Airbus C295M medium multi-role transport aircraft.

According to Jane's All the World's Aircraft: In Service the MiG-35 has been described by the manufacturer as "exhibiting the further development of the MiG-29K/KUB and MiG-29M/M2 fighters in the field of the combat efficiency enhancement, universality, and operational characteristics improvement". Emphasis has been given in the MiG-35 to reliability of the airframe, engines, and avionics.
