May be so...But I doubt you know much about it.

There are plenty of Soviet defectors to the US, and as an airplane guy, my favorite Soviet defector is Viktor Belenko, the man who flew to Japan with a MIG-25. Most people do not have access to the unadulterated technical review of that jet. I had the pleasure of reading that review when I was active duty USAF. What a piece of flying shit that was the MIG-25. And I say that kindly.

Anyway...Belenko was shocked that in the US, the US mandated that there be expiration date on meat packages in the markets. He was so overwhelmed at how much better the US was over the Soviet Union that for a short time, he believed the entire New York City was a CIA construct specifically for him.

The funny part is that even though I may not have been to the USSR, and probably never will, I have a clearer perspective of what it was than you ever will.

Many of the brilliant Russian scientists and engineers came to the United States after the fall of the USSR. I believe many of the Russian Jews took advantage of the United States policy to allow religious refugees from Russia. The large Russian Jewish population in Detroit area as well as in the Midwest is a result of this 'Third wave' immigration of Russian Jews to the United States. Interestingly enough, many of the Russian Jewish migrants to the United State in the 1990s were professionals, skilled laborers; many of whom had engineering, medical backgrounds. Where they experienced Pogroms in the USSR and had to keep secret their Hebrew faith during those times, in the United States, they blossomed. Many Russian-Americans of Jewish faith are a successful community here.

Many of those brilliant minds moved to Israel too...so you can see why the US does what it can to avoid Israel jumping ship and siding with the Russians. They have a percentage of the population that may be very inclined to do that.

Nothing to do with the false belief that the American space program came from the Germans.

It did come from us. The americans had a scientist active in rocket theory but no space program. The space program started with von Braun. Thats a simple fact.

my girlfriends parents come from east germany. And they are happy communism collapsed. Socialism is hell and destroys freedom. I would always fight against socialism.

People on this forum continually call Americans 'stupid' and 'ignorant', and yet they are blind to their own flawed reasoning. You cannot see the flaw here: That if something occurred in a certain manner, there can be no alternative paths and/or methods towards that occurrence.

Stop it Gambit. US didn't even know what to do with rocket tech at the time. If not, how else do you explain the lack of interest and funding for Goddard's programme and the super haste with which scientists were beng scooped up from Germany in the final stages of the war after the rocket's practical uses were properly demonstrated in combat.

Not because the US had no technical expertise to embark on a space program. After WW II, there was a race against Stalin to get as much Nazi scientists as possible, not because the US came to an epiphany: 'Oh no, we are so stupid!' But because the US realized that even though WW II was over, the next global contest was just started -- with Stalin.
