Russia invites Indian investment
Russia wants strong Indian presence in the energy, pharmaceutical and IT sectors, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin told Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma.
Receiving the Indian Minister in his Novo-Ogoryovo residence outside Moscow on Saturday, Mr. Putin promised to support India's bid for a stake in the Sakhalin-3 oil and gas project in the Russian Far East and invited Indian companies to invest in Russia, notably in the pharma and IT industries.
The Russian Premier also assured his support for long-term supplies of Russian oil and gas to India, Mr. Sharma said.
An ONGC Videsh Ltd. delegation will soon visit Russia to discuss Indian participation in tapping huge natural gas fields in the Yamal Peninsula in northwest Siberia. During Mr. Putin's visit to India in March, ONGC and Gazprom agreed to study the possibility of building an LNG project in Yamal.
Seven Indian pharma companies were already prepared to set up production base in Russia, Mr. Sharma said. A delegation of senior industry officials will visit Russia shortly to discuss specific projects for the manufacture of generics as per the list rolled out by the Russian side.
Trade growth hailed
Mr. Putin hailed the robust growth in Indo-Russian trade, which surged 26 per cent in the first quarter of this year to about $8 billion after increasing 7 per cent last year. During a 70-minute meeting, Mr. Putin and Mr. Sharma discussed the full range of bilateral economic relations. The meeting and its duration shows just how keen Russia is to expand trade and economic ties with India, diplomatic sources said. Mr. Sharma, accompanied by a high-power business delegation, visited Russia to attend the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum and interact with the Russian leadership. On the sidelines of the forum, Mr. Sharma met Russian Deputy Premier Sergei Sobyanin, who co-chairs the Indo-Russian Intergovernmental Commission, and Trade and Industry Minister Viktor Khristenko. For the first time, an India-Russia Business Dialogue has been organised with the framework of St. Petersburg Forum. The Confederation of Indian Industry signed a cooperation pact with Russian Business Council on Cooperation with India.
