Situation in Ukraine is tensed since the last decade. After the Georgian War in 2008 , Ukraine move away from CTSO and was working to move towards EU and then tension related to the Black sea port and gas crisis.

Now the result is in front, Crimea is annexed and seperatists in Eastern Ukraine.

DTEK Energo will buy 30,000 tonnes more gas coal in Poland in addition to earlier contracted 100,000 tonnes. The company will supply it in November to Burshtyn and Dobrotvirska thermal power plants (TPPs, managed by DTEK Zakhidenergo), the press service of the company has reported.

The press service said that first wagons with Polish coal started arriving to DTEK Zakhidenergo early October. At present, over 84,000 tonnes of imported coal has been shipped to TPPs.

"Since June DTEK's TPPs have been operating in the extra coal burning mode. The Ukrenergo's dispatch center ordered that DTEK's TPPs will compensate for a lack of the power grid's capacity. This has considerably increased the burden on our equipment and the volumes of coal supplies to our TTPs," Commercial Director of DTEK Energo Vitaliy Butenko said.

He said that the diversification strategy approved by the company allows boosting coal supplies from different directions, in particular, from Poland.

DTEK plans to import about 2 million tonnes of coal in the second, third and fourth quarters of 2017, DTEK CEO Maksym Tymchenko has told Interfax-Ukraine.

"We see the need for more than 2 million tonnes of coal by the end of the year. Today one vessel has already been contracted, we expect delivery in early May. We are negotiating with the rest. This week we must approve the commercial strategy of providing our thermal power plants (TPP) with coal by the end of the year," he said.

Taking into account the increased load on TPPs using coal, DTEK plans this year to increase coal imports from Poland to 500,000 tonnes.

According to Tymchenko, 5 million tonnes of coal needed for Ukrainian TPPs and combined heat and power plants (CHPP) this year can be found in foreign markets, however its price with delivery and transshipment in Ukraine today is about $100-110 per tonne, while TPP tariffs for electricity supply at the beginning of the year foresee the price of $82 per tonne.

A ship loaded with 62,000 tonnes of steam coal last week departed the port of the American city of Baltimore and should arrive in Yuzhny port in Ukraine by mid-September, Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Valeriy Chaly has told the ZN.ua portal.

According to him, the relevant contract for the supply of coal was signed between the U.S. company XCoal Energy and Resources and Ukraine's state-owned Centrenergo on July 14 this year.

"According to the terms of the contract, it's worth expecting the delivery of 700,000 tonnes of anthracite steam coal from the United States by the end of the year. It was planned that the volume of the first batch will be 85,000 tonnes. But the shippers managed to quickly find a slightly smaller vessel for 62,000, I was present there during the loading along with the American high officials. The vessel with American coal last week left the port of Baltimore, it will take about three weeks to go to Ukraine, therefore we can expect its arrival in Yuzhny port by the middle of September," the diplomat said.

According to him, Centrenergo has full information about the supplies of this anthracite coal to Ukraine.

DTEK is waiting for the arrival of two ships with anthracite from South Africa in the middle of September.

"Each ship will deliver 75,000 tonnes of coal that is in short supply [totally 150,000 tonnes]. Our thermal power plants [TPPs] – Kryvy Rih and Prydniprovska – would be able to generate enough electricity for Ukraine. These plants would help to compensate downs in the generation of power for the Ukrainian power grid that will start with first really cold temperatures," the company wrote on its Facebook page.

As reported, DTEK has imported 225,000 tonnes of anthracite from South Africa. The first vessel with 75,000 tonnes of anthracite arrived to Ukraine on May 25, the second on July 23 and the third on August 14. The company contracted a total of 675,000 tonnes of coal in South Africa.
