Russia develops air defense lasers

According to CEO of Russia’s Almaz-Antei advanced arms makers Dr Vladislav Menshikov, his company continues work, started decades ago in the Soviet Union, to develop powerful airborne lasers capable of shooting down hostile aircraft and incoming missiles. Sources say a weapon of this kind can destroy targets travelling at altitudes of up to 40 kilometers.

Chief Editor of the Natsionalnaya Oborona (National Defence) journal Dr Igor Korothcenko is ‘moderately skeptical’:

“Laser weapons will catch on, but not before 30 to 40 years from now. The problem is that developing them is exorbitantly costly. In the near future, guided missiles will be doing the air defence job. In the meantime, Russia has made considerable progress in laser weapon development. Its work in this field is focused on powerful airborne laser guns.”

Laser weapon R and D in the US is on hold, but is likely to be reactivated, as the Americans build missile defence systems and consider plans to take weapons to orbit. Russia is doing everything in its power to avert a costly arms race in space.

It is quite likely that the Russians will achieve this.. things have come a long way from the Russia of the early 90's.
Some of the best digital systems come from Russia now.

its pointless to waste money developing lasers to take down planes etc... it is alot easier to put reflective sheilding on a plane so it has no effect at all lol

the point is, the lasers will have no effect... so why spend millions if not billions developping them for that purpose?? when you can build a defence for it for tens of thousands and very quickly?

a reflective sheilding would have no adverse effect for the plane itself.. it just be build into its normal framework... change a few panels.. wahlaa

No increased return of various energies and signals that will collide with the panels?

Umm....far from the reality. LASER (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation), isn't just a radar signal that you can put reactive shielding and life turns great. The accuracy, heat and resulting damage will melt electronic equipments. Even with reactive protection, it'll cut through it and will bring the plane down. If this was an IR than I'd probably agree with you to some degree. But Laser is a different scenario altogether, especially when used in the combat environment

you guys need to check the MLTK lasers and its successful tests against a biplane target.

First of all what your saying is absolutely not true. I suggest you read up on the subject more before making definitive statements.

The Free Electron Laser (FEL) weapon system will provide U.S. ships with speed-of-light fire capability for a range of missions and threats, a key element of a future future shipboard layered defense.

An Innovative Naval Prototype program for the FEL technology began in 2010. It will demonstrate scalability of the necessary FEL physics and engineering for an eventual megawatt-class device.
