Russia and India to develop BrahMos light cruise missile for PAK FA

REUTOV, January 27. /TASS/. The BrahMos light cruise missile will be mounted both in submarines’ torpedo launchers and on Russia’s fifth-generation T-50 PAK FA (Prospective Airborne Complex of Frontline Aviation) fighter jet, CEO and General Designer of the Machine-Building R&D Consortium Alexander Leonov said on Friday.

"We are working on the missile’s light version. It should fit the size of a torpedo tube and be almost 1.5 times smaller by its weight. It will be possible to mount our airborne missile on a wide range [of aircraft]. Of course, we’ll be developing it, first of all, for the fifth-generation plane but, possibly, it will be mounted on the MiG-35 fighter, although we have not carried out such developments," he said.

The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile is the product of Russia’s Machine-Building Research and Development Consortium and India’s Defense Research and Development Organization, which set up BrahMos Aerospace joint venture in 1998.

The missile’s name comes from the names of two rivers: the Indian Brahmaputra of and the Russian Moscow river. The missile has a range of 290 km and carries a warhead weighing from 200 to 300 kg.

In a boost to India’s air strike capability, frontline fighter aircraft Su-30 MKI on June 25 flew with an integrated BrahMos supersonic cruise missile that has a range of over 290 kms, making IAF the only air force in the world in possession of such a system.

With this successful flight, the BrahMos air version programme now inches closer towards actual test firing when a 2,500 kg BrahMos air-to-ground missile will be fired from Sukhoi-30 in coming months.


Integration of BrahMos with Su-30 MKI will render the weapon a multi-platform capability while making the IAF the only Air Force in the world in procession of a supersonic cruise missile system.

The Indian Air Force is elated about the enhancement of the firepower and the range this deadly combination of Su-30 with Brahmos will provide to them, an official statement said.



The powerful missile will enable the IAF penetrate deep inside enemy territories to deliver a deadly blow to their vital installations from stand-off ranges.

The integration brings a paradigm shift in the capability of the IAF vis-a-vis its adversaries.

The Su-30-Brahmos combination will carry out air combat operations within and beyond visibility range and will provide the IAF with the capability of attacking targets protected by powerful air defence assets.

Today’s flight trial has been keenly observed by several other countries in possession of the Su-30 strike fighter which are looking to acquiring a lethal weapon system for the Russian-made warplanes.

“It is a perfect example of Make in India and an engineering marvel in aviation history of India. It proves that when all agencies come together with one mission, there is nothing like impossible”, said T Suvarna Raju, CMD, HAL who was present on the occasion.

He pointed out that this programme was taken up by HAL as an indigenous challenge at its Nashik Division and the required data was generated without the assistance of OEM for the modification.

Sudhir Kumar Mishra, CEO and MD, BraMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd (BAPL) said it is the first time in the world that such a heavyweight supersonic cruise missile has been integrated on fighter aircraft.

“The world did not believe that we could do it and thanks to the vision of late President A P J Abdul Kalam, we could achieve this today and history is made”, he added.

Around 40 Su-30 MKI aircraft are expected to be modified.

In September 2010 India’s newly constituted tri-services Strategic Forces Command (SFC) submitted a proposal to the Defence Ministry for setting up two dedicated squadrons of aircraft comprising 40 Su-30MKI air dominance fighters. The task of this “mini air force” is to deliver nuclear weapons.

The picture became clearer in October 2012 when the Cabinet Committee on Security green lighted a programme to carry out structural and software modifications on 42 Su-30MKIs and acquire 216 air-launched Brahmos missiles. Until then, the Brahmos – the product of an India-Russia joint venture – was for exclusive use by the Navy.



In March 2015 the SFC received the first of these 42 Sukhois equipped with the air launched version of the supersonic BrahMos. This is the first time that the SFC, which at present depends on the Indian Air Force (IAF) for delivering nuclear weapons under its command, is acquiring its own aerial assets.

In June 2016 first test flight done.. October brahmos successfully fired from Su30mki.. One land test is planned this month.. Several test flights are done between.. Will soon start inducting.. Within 2-3 years all 42 will be ready..
