Russia and India: A 21st Centuary decline

India should be spending the money on their people, who the hells going to invade India, over a billion people, neighbours that are extremely weak compared to them. Invest the money in your people, there is no war or future wars that I can see.

Defense should be the priority of every country, period. you don't when the enemy will strike. if you're not prepared, then say goodbye to your infrastructures.

IMO india should extend their defense partnership with their Asian friends like the ASEAN. this is also to counter China rising presence in the south east asia. Indonesia has been and always be the Friend of India. it's time to apply the same to other ASEAN countries.

India's military expenditure is 2.4% of gdp for 2014
Military expenditure (% of GDP) | Data | Table

Our current spending is to modernize the armed forces and maintain traditional capacity of numbers
Their is error in World Bank Data.
In previous Budget our Defence Budget is 1.78 % of the GDP.

From 1947 we have fought 4 major wars & 3 local skirmish.
We have a neighbors who have tons of extremist Islamist Jihadis who are ready to slit throat of our people.
Currently we spend 1.78% of our GDP in defence .
For people we spend lot more but if corruption would not tackle then there would be nil effect despite being 100% of Budget spent on people.
Real goal should be India should eliminate their corruption to good of their own problem.

Since 90s we applied 'Look East' policy now we are on 'Act East' policy .
We already are consolidating our economic, strategic & cultural relationship with ASEAN .
With Indonesia we have long cultural ties & have excellent relationship since Sukarno era.

But India wants to dominate its neighbors and become a global superpower. Helping the poor will not achieve superpower status for India.

We have been attacked in the past by China and Pakistan. Today we face a two-front threat from both nuclear armed neighbours. That's not how I would describe 'extremely weak to attack'.
Mind you, India still spends only 1.75% of GDP on defence.

But India wants to dominate its neighbors and become a global superpower. Helping the poor will not achieve superpower status for India.
Thats what Luca1 thinks India wants to do, and not what India wants. A small difference.

Why does this person always spout chicken shit that serves no purpose and is mostly borderline trolling/baiting?

In anycase.. I'll make it very clear and capitalize it so that it doesn't strain your bird brain.

We want to develop our nation. Clear??
Since it's very large it is bound to become a major global player. Clear??

Now. Many people will say stuff like becoming a superpower etc. This is expected bravado and what people do when it comes to politics.

Finally, we are forced to spend quite a lot on Defence because of two significant neighbours with which wars have been fought.

No you can resume your chicken shit..

Biju Patnaik came in contact with Jawaharlal Nehru during his participation in Indian freedom struggle. He became one of his trusted friends. Nehru was sympathetic to the freedom struggle of the Indonesian people who had traditional links with Indian sub-continent from the ancient days. Indonesia was under Dutch rule from 1816 to 1941 when it was occupied by the Japanese. The Indonesian freedom fighters declared the independence of Indonesia on 17 August 1945 two days after the Japanese collapse in the Second World War.

The Dutch tried to regain control over these territories and started fomenting trouble for the new Government. President Sukarno’s government launched a vigorous propaganda activity to gain support for their cause. Sjahrir who became Prime Minister of Indonesia on 14 November 1945 was a trusted lieutenant of Sukarno. He also became friendly with Nehru who was at that time the Foreign Minister and the leader of the Interim Government of India. In July 1946, the government of Indonesia concluded an agreement with India government to supply 4,000,000 tonnes of rice in exchange of textile, agricultural implements, tyres and other goods which India would send to Indonesia for her economic rehabilitation.

On 23 March 1947 Nehru called 22 Asian countries for First Inter-Asia Conference to which Sjahrir was specially invited. He addressed the conference after concluding the agreement with Dutch on 25 March. The Dutch continued to foment trouble on one pretext or the other. Finally they launched a large scale attack on Indonesia on 21 July 1947. Immediately President Sukarno consulted Sjahrir and ordered him to leave the country to create international public opinion against the Dutch and also persuade the friendly countries to raise the issue before the UNO. He tried to come out but could not succeed as the Dutch had absolute control over Indonesian sea and air routes. He was also under surveillance.

Nehru came to his help at this critical juncture. He entrusted this task to Biju Patnaik, who was an expert pilot and was famous for his passion for adventurous achievements. Biju Patnaik sprang up to instant action. As an avid reader of the history of Kalinga, Biju knew how Kalinga and Indonesia had a long-standing cultural link in the past and the opportunity now at hand to render some service to the people of Indonesia at their crucial hour of need should never be lost sight of. He braved all hazards.

He flew to Java and brought Sultan Sjahrir aboard from Java islands on 22 July 1947 using a Dakota and reached India via Singapore on 24 July. Sjahrir was successful in his mission at last. For his act of bravery Patnaik was given honorary citizenship of Indonesia and awarded ‘Bhoomi Putra’, the highest Indonesian award and a rare distinction ever granted to a foreigner. In 1996, when Indonesia was celebrating its 50th Independence Day, Biju Patnaik was awarded the highest national award, the ‘Bintang Jasu Utama’.

In return, the Indonesian Govt offered honorary citizenship, huge land & a sprawling bungalow to which Biju Patnaik politely avoided & said he would prefer to stay/serve his own motherland – Kalinga. President Sukarno’s daughter Megawati Sukarnoputri (in Sanskrit means -Goddess of the Clouds Daughter of Sukarno) name was suggested by Biju Patnaik who was born at that turbulent time.

In Odia “Utkalara BaraPutra kebala odisha mati ra nuhanti se sara bishwo re parichita, kintu. aama desha re pujya pujara abhaba hetu se upajukta sanmana ra adhikari hoi parinahanti .”

India and Russia's relationship is not in decline....it is going through a process of transformation. Until recently, Russia was the dominant partner. But with India's growing and larger economy, India is becoming the dominant partner in the relationship. Many of the joint defence projects are now substantially funded by India. India has embarked on a massive modernisation program which will require capital and technology from a large number of developed countries in the world. Hence, in comparison the Russian relationship may look small. But the inherent closeness will remain as even today and in the forseeable future, India is Russia's only friend of any significance.

.
Me thinks India is shooting itself in the foot by not being pragmatic with russain defense interest. It is in India's interest to have a strong russian Military Ind Complex. MoD could have kept atleast another 10 to 15 developmental projects alive with Russia like the K172 AAM, K77 AESA AAM, BTR90/Helina and Krymsk platform, Joint Aesa radar program.etc....
There still exists a large potential in Indo-Russia joint programs, similar to Indo-Israeli programs. This area was absolutely neglected by the two previous congress govt's hopefully this one has a longterm strategic outlook.

Totally agree they need money & have the tech

India spends about 10 percent of its GDP on mandatory education, food and poverty reduction programs as compared to only 2 percent on defence.
