The head of the Russian delegation at the INDO DEFENCE-2018 exhibition, Mikhail Petukhov, said that Russia and Bangladesh are discussing the supply of Mi-35M attack helicopters, RIA Novosti writes .

According to him, everything is still under discussion. Terms of signing the contract will be known later.

Mi-35M is a unique universal combat helicopter that can effectively solve fire missions. On board can be up to eight military personnel with weapons, up to 1,500 kilograms of ammunition or other cargo and up to 2,400 kilograms of cargo on external sling.

I was wondering how BDG is going to reconcile between ongoing US weapon aquisition talks and pending multi bullion dollar weapon import from Russia. Not to mention US Department of Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) which came hard on Rosboronexport and it's import countries with sanctions.

BD is completely sensitive to US interest given they are our largest economic partner.

I am sure these purchases have been cleared with US first. If the later was to have a problem with BD buying weapons from russia or china it will stop immediately.

Are there some kind US issued discreet waivers for BD which were also granted to India and Turkey ? It will be interesting to see if it unfolds in that way.

BD has purchased helicopters from Russia recently. I think the CAATSA sanctions are specially geared towards higher value offensive/defensive weapons. Which was one of the reasons why BD did not proceed with purchasing Russian jets.

MI-35 can be used in counter-terrorism operations and also the UN missions. So I think US will not object to that.

That is a satisfactory explaination. Thank you Leon.

I would second that. These helios whilst certaintly be armed to the teeth.....BD configuration more geared towards UN operations, logistics support and internal border management. They are defensive in nature and I am completely certain BD consulted US prior to purchase to ensure no negative reaction.

US dont care, there is virtually not a thing BD will undertake to jeopardise the US market access.

We have need for armed helios and it is even possible that US will sell them to us based on recent news from official US sources.
