Syrian refugees to be first to benefit from campaign

Drive to dress one million needy children gets under way

Syrian refugee children in Jordan are to be the first recipients of the ‘Dress One Million Needy Children’ campaign and should receive donations by Sunday, an Emirates Red Crescent official said.

The campaign was launched by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on Thursday.

Mohammad Abdullah Al Haj Al Zarouni, Emirates Red Crescent, Dubai Branch Manager, told Gulf News that they are very thankful that Shaikh Mohammad chose the Emirates Red Crescent to be part of the huge drive.

“We are proud with the trust he has instilled in us and that he has chosen us to be part of this very big initiative.”

The campaign aims to collect donations during Ramadan to dress and clothe one million needy children around the world. It costs Dh40 to dress one child.

Al Zarouni said that Shaikh Mohammad always surprises people with his unique and noble initiatives, adding that “every initiative Shaikh Mohammad launches has been a 100 per cent successful”.

He added that they have already set plans in place and formed teams to set them in motion.

“We will first help out Syrian refugees in Jordan, and hopefully by Sunday we will have clothed most of the children in these camps, then we can move to other countries such as Bosnia, Yemen and Egypt.”

“By Ramadan 19, [when the campaign ends] we will hopefully be able to reach the one million children goal,” Al Zarouni said.

Every year during Ramadan, Shaikh Mohammad launches a number of humanitarian and social initiatives that are compatible with the values of Ramadan and the traditions that encourage goodness and giving. Such initiatives include ‘Dubai Cares’ and ‘Family Village for Orphans’.

Shaikh Mohammad tweeted on Thursday that “Dubai Cares’s achievements in supporting eight million children gave us confidence to begin our new campaign today.”

Tariq Al Gurg, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Cares, said it was in Shaikh Mohammad’s nature to always take the initiative when it comes to “supporting those affected by harsh realities around the world.”

He added that this initiative did not come as a surprise, as Shaikh Mohammad aims to reach out to the underprivileged, specifically addressing the need of one million children worldwide. He said everyone at Dubai Cares were inspired by Shaikh Mohammad’s humanitarian efforts.

“This campaign encourages the entire UAE community to extend its support to those who are forced to make do with little in their lives, providing them with basic necessities and helping them maintain their dignity in the harsh environment they live in,” he said.

Al Gurg added: “We are continuously engaging with our extensive network of partners to identify ways through which we can reach those in need and alleviate their suffering.”

Ebrahim Bu Melha, Adviser to Shaikh Mohammad for Humanitarian and Cultural Affairs and Director-General of the Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Humanitarian and Charity Establishment, said that “Shaikh Mohammad is known for launching large-scale initiatives on both the local and international levels”.

“When we heard that Shaikh Mohammad was launching an initiative we knew it would be something big, but we did not imagine it would be as massive as help clothing one million children across the globe.”

He added that Shaikh Mohammad could have undertaken the funding of the entire initiative on his own, but he chose to let everyone contribute to this great cause so they can experience the same feeling he experiences when he helps people out.

Khalfan Khalifa Al Mazroui, Chairman of Dar Al Ber Society, praised the initiative and said that it would bring hope to children in need.

Sheikh Mohammed to clothe one million children

A million children will receive free clothing this Ramadan thanks to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, the Vice President.

The project launched by Sheikh Mohammed, also the Ruler of Dubai, will run to UAE Humanitarian Work Day on September 19.

The date is also the ninth anniversary of the founding President Sheikh Zayed's death.

The clothing campaign has been launched in collaboration with Emirates Red Crescent, which regularly works with poor and deprived people in Asia and Africa.

"The Holy Month of Ramadan represents an exceptional opportunity to celebrate the values of goodness, giving and cooperation," Sheikh Mohammed told the state news agency Wam.

This "increases the importance of launching social and charitable constructive initiatives during the month, especially those initiatives in which the people of the UAE can share and collaborate.

"Zayed was the source of giving. He was the teacher and the one who inspired the generous people of the UAE, who are an ideal example of efforts and generosity that knows no bounds and no discrimination.

"The spirit of giving is a characteristic of Zayed's sons and daughters. It is a culture which is deeply rooted in our community."
