Romania was officially welcomed into the Lockheed Martin [NYSE:LMT] F-16 family at a reception preceding the Black Sea Defense Aerospace tradeshow here today. The Romanian Air Force is the 28th customer of the most widely used 4th generation multi-role fighter in the world.
Romania signed a Letter of Offer and Acceptance with the U.S. Government in December 2013 which provides programmatic support to a U.S.-approved third party transfer of F-16 aircraft from Portugal to Romania. That agreement delivers 12 F-16 Block 15 midlife upgrade aircraft to Romania beginning in 2016. Lockheed Martin will design, integrate and support the installation of updated F-16 software.
“Lockheed Martin takes great pride in the F-16, from initial production to capability upgrades through the life of the aircraft,” said Roderick McLean, Lockheed Martin’s vice president and general manager for the F-16/F-22 Integrated Fighter Group. “We look forward to supporting Romania’s aircraft fleet modernization and establishing an enduring relationship as Romania revolutionizes its aviation capabilities to strengthen its national defense.”
This year the F-16 Fighting Falcon celebrates 40 years of evolution, and remains the most effective 4th generation multi-role fighter in the world. More than 4,540 F-16 aircraft have been delivered to date, and production is expected to continue through 2017. Lockheed Martin remains the preferred choice for F-16 major upgrade programs based on its proven performance, credible schedule execution and the most cost effective solutions for all F-16 versions.
Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security and aerospace company that employs approximately 113,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation’s net sales for 2013 were $45.4 billion.

As a little piece of trivia the squadron who will operate these F16's is the "newly" formed 53rd squadron.I say "newly" because the squadron was disbanded at the end of WW2.As the last picture shows, they've jumped from WW2 propeller fighters to F16's :-)

Nice 1.
Why don't you people buy a European fighter jet? Say our Typhoons or France's Rafale, or even Swedish Gripen?
Afterall I'm sure European countries can negotiate a discount for Romania(or jet transfer) a fellow E.U member.

1.To expensive. The first 12 jets came at 800 million $,including spares, training, weapons and modifying 3 airbases. The follow on orders will be even less.

2.Rafale and Typhoons are expensive to operate.Look at the Austrians.

3.US is the most important strategic partner for Romania.

Lool How can they be so cheap?
They are second hand I guess? There must be some serious discount the Americans made for this deal then. Especially considering your third point.

US is phasing out the F-16 manufacturing lines. That is why they offered to place the entire line in India if India purchased 126 F-16's.

So it doesn't cost them much to churn out cheap jets just for sake of keeping the lines running. The manufacturing and R&D costs have been amortized decades ago.
