Three days after the foreign ministers denial, top police officers Sunday admitted to a parliamentary watchdog that Rohingya Muslims had managed Bangladeshi passports to stay in the Middle East.
The Myanmar nationals had been involved in criminal activities holding Bangladeshi passports, thereby tarnishing the countrys image.
Replying to a question from Awami League MP Fazle Rabbi Miah, Foreign Minister Dipu Moni Thursday told parliament that Rohingyas were not getting Bangladeshi passports.
The high-ranking police officers made comments at the meeting of the parliamentary standing committee on the ministry for expatriates welfare and overseas employment.
They turned up at the meeting at the parliament building as the watchdog on November 1 decided listening to police personnel and officials of the immigration and passport directorate.
They (police) have told us that in some cases Rohingyas manage Bangladeshi passports, Anisul Islam Mahmud, chairman of the standing committee, told daily sun after the meeting.
They have been committing criminal acts in the Middle East, especially in Saudi Arabia, he said, adding that his committee had recommended taking immediate tough measures to stop such practice.
Inspector General of Police Hassan Mahmood Khandker, officers-in-charge of the Special Branch of Police and senior officials of the Home Ministry attended the meeting.
The police chief reportedly told the meeting that police had been vigilant to stop any malpractices in the issuance of passports in future.
The chairman said the watchdog had recommended making the national identity card and the birth certificate mandatory for giving passports.
The committee also suggested taking legal actions against the wrongdoers involved in the passport forgery.
Expatriates welfare and overseas employment minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Jafrul Islam Chowdhury, Ishque Hossain Talukder, ABM Abul Qasem, Col (Rtd) A A Maruf Saqlaan, Mustaque Ahmed Ruhi and Shahida Tarekh Dipti attended the meeting.
