I don't know which country you are using as a reference but in the UK we have a strict adherence to the law in this kind of case.
You are only allowed to use as much force as is necessary to expel the intruder. You csnnot go over and beyond that to hurt the intruder or to extract revenge.
We've just had a case recently where the householder killed the intruder, he was gound guilty of manslaughter rather than murder but he still got a 19 year prison sentence.
Then there is the famous Tony Martin case.

True that is pathetic, I've seen rapists been given only 5 years for stranger rape, figure that one out. They just don't want people to defend themselves.
At the end of the day if you hesitate or try to use the BS of 'reasonable force' you may end up dead.
The criminals couldn't give a damn and will murder you. Better to be serving time than be in the ground with your loved ones left behind.

There are many examples of householders who have killed intruders and not been prosecuted because the death was deemed to have been caused during the necessary use of minimum force.
Anything more than what is deemed as necessary force is deemed excessive, therefore criminal.
This is a very important nuance.
What the law will not allow is trespass or burglary to be used as an excuse for murder.
