A policeman has died in riots that have broken out following the discovery of the bodies of three ethnic leaders in Pakistan's Balochistan province.

The policeman was killed by protesters' gunfire in the town of Khuzdar.

Protesters say the three Baloch nationalist leaders were detained by security forces last Friday and had been missing since.

There has been a long-waged insurgency in Balochistan for a greater share of natural resources and more autonomy.

Set on fire

The mutilated and decomposed bodies of the three leaders were found by police before dawn near Turbat.

The three were named as Ghullam Muhammad Baloch, Lala Munir Baloch and Sher Muhammad Bugti.

The BBC's Azizullah Khan in Quetta says Ghullam Muhammad Baloch was a leader of his own faction of the Balochistan National Movement and a key member of the committee set up to try to secure the release of abducted UN worker John Solecki, who was freed last Saturday.

Sher Muhammad Bugti was a leader of the Balochistan Republican Party.

The three were allegedly detained last Friday by security forces from the offices of a lawyer in Turbat who represents opposition parties in Balochistan.

After the bodies were found riots broke out in provincial capital Quetta, Khuzdar and a number of towns in the Makran division.

A number of banks and offices have been set on fire.

In Quetta, three policemen were injured when a grenade was thrown at a police van.

Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed to control the riots and tear gas has been fired at protesters in Quetta.

Police spokesman Ayaz Baloch told the BBC an investigation was under way but it was unclear who carried out the killings.

Balochistan Chief Minister Mohammad Aslam Raisani has ordered a judicial inquiry into the leaders' deaths.

Opposition activists had been demonstrating since the leaders disappeared on Friday, setting up a protest camp outside the press club in Quetta.

In August 2006, Balochistan experienced widespread rioting and strikes after the killing of tribal leader Nawab Akbar Bugti. Hundreds were arrested.

Writing recently on Balochistan, BBC columnist Ahmed Rashid pointed to the worsening situation in the province, where the wide-ranging political and economic grievances of the alienated Baloch people have remained largely forgotten and unaddressed.

This has happened after Zardari got assurance from US that no drone attacks would happen in Baluchistan.

"President Obama has denied any such intentions to extend the use of drone attacks to Balochistan. These drone attacks are counter-productive,’ he said in an interview to a foreign newspaper." - DAWN

How come GOP shows the courage to kill Bugti and now these leaders, while convincing US not to conduct drone attacks there, while fail on both fronts in NWFP ???

How can you even compare the killing of Bugti and drone attacks!!

Bugti was an instigator, supporter of separatism and was harboring/befriending people who were not pro-Pakistan, so what else you and others expect should be done to people like these.

What would india done after finding a man who fits in the details mentioned above???

but i cant understand your logic of suspected US drone attacks in baluchistan!
why should US attack baluchistan!
just because there is a low level voilence happening there?
what next ? some low level voilence in any part of pakistan, gives US authority to carry out drone attacks?:tsk:

He was killed in a raid, he didn't go down easy, the BLA fought for him and evidently he caught a bullet.

But nonetheless Bugti could've been handled differently, but at the time intelligence was sure he is in bed with the Indians and he wouldn't relent on the attacks on Pakistani gas fields and army personnel. When he killed the Chinese and French Engineers, his fate was sealed.

Thats a great thing, I hope they get justice. This has BLA written all over it. Balochistan was relatively calm and someone just wanted to spark things back up!

Capture and put him on trial.......the guy was assassinated-murdered by musharaff.

i think that's what i have tried to say.

He was not murdered but yes he was killed!

He was killed in an accident.

The cave collapsed and that's it.

Along with him many soldiers were also killed inside the cave.

Had he been captured alive definitely he should have been brought to justice, and that's what the government had planned.

But guess what everything doesn't go by the plan.

He did not come out of the cave. How were they suppose to capture him? The ones who went in to talk with him were killed. It was an unfortunate case of "you live by the gun, you die by the gun".

Secondly lets not blindly blame Musharraf for all that went on (I know some may be naturally inclined to do so for their personal dislike of him). The officers on the ground have quite a bit of leeway to conduct operations especially in the field. A senior SSG officer died while trying to negotiate with Bugti along with a few others.

While you cry over Bugti's death, do know that there are countless others whose names will never be known who met the same fate as Bugti while under his tribal leadership. Bugti played the classic fuedal game in which many many poor people suffered.

There is nothing to indicate that the GoP was interested in killing these leaders. Zardari visited the province a few days ago, announced a multibillion development plan, and the Baluchistan CM stated that 'reconciliation and dialog were bearing results'.

The only parties with an interest in killing these leaders would be the ones that want to stir trouble up.

Even Bugti was handled in the open, and not mysteriously found dead.

The MO of the killings does not match that of the GoP or PA.

I hope the same excuse works for musharaff......"you live by the gun, you die by the gun".

The same way nawaaz sharif can blame the kargil war on "officers on the ground having quite a bit of leeway to conduct operations".

And countless people that have been killed by mushys involvment in the WoT......"whose names will never be known" ..classic power game in which many many poor people suffered.

What a wishful thinking indeed.
The same way nawaaz sharif can blame the kargil war on "officers on the ground having quite a bit of leeway to conduct operations".
Well i will neither agree with you nor with Agnostic Muslim on this. Yes the leeway is their with the people of are facing the bullets and are uncertain of their next breath and it might have happen during the kargil War but this was veratinly not the case with Bugti's death.

As already mentioned by many members that Bugti was killed in an accident. Yes he was been pursued and he was encircled and was being negotiated to come out of the bloody cave with his men.

The cave was os L shape from inside so in order to get to Bugti they have to get inside. Whenever and attempt was made to talk with him the forces received fire from inside. Ultimately they went inside to conduct face-to-face negotiations. A team was sent inside along with an Officer and while they were inside the cave the damn cave collapsed!!! And that is it!

Bugti his colleagues the officer and his men were sent down the rubble and crushed. No one dare to kill an SSG officer or soldier just like that dude.

i have the picture of the cave let me see if i can get it for you.

And countless people that have been killed by mushys involvment in the WoT......"whose names will never be known" ..classic power game in which many many poor people suffered.

Come up with some proof.

Tomorrow if your dog dies you can sure go to our media and blame it on Musharraf, i am sure it would be the headlines the next day!!:)
