Pakistan has lost Iranian rice market to India due to lack of proper transaction channels and relatively high prices, which have negatively affected exports, rice exporters told Business Recorder. Earlier, Iran was importing about 0.6 million tonnes of rice from Pakistan, however India has taken over this market and as a result Pakistan rice exports declined, said senior vice Chairman Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) Noman Ahmad Sheikh.

Talking to Business Recorder, he said the main reason behind this market loss was lack of proper transaction system between Pakistan and Iran; however the latter has developed proper channels with India, thus facilitating the whole process. Further Pakistan Research Institutes have failed to develop a single seed during last two decades contrary to India where a lot of new seeds have developed.

Due to outdated seed in the country, per acre yield declined and cost of production increased, said Sheikh adding that Pakistani rice prices are higher in the international market due to high cost of production and are resultantly losing market share.

However, the REAP officer bearer said that Pakistan is going strong in China rice market which would help in achieving about $2.5 billion rice exports in the current year. He said that government has neither incentivized rice exporters directly nor intervened/procured rice, however gifted about 0.6 million tonnes to China which helped recovery from gloomy market with respect to prices.

A delegation recently visited China and received a overwhelming response, said Sheikh adding that exporters are terming the new market a good omen which would certainly increase country's exports and bring foreign exchange earnings. He said Irri-6 market is stable; however Basmati rice has witnessed a major decline with respect to value and quantity over the past year in the country.

The country's rice exports declined by 12.3 percent in value, despite favourable 7.6 percent growth in quantity during 2015-16, mainly because of fall in commodity prices in the international market. Basmati rice declined by 27.9 percent in value and 7.5 percent in quantity, while other varieties under rice group witnessed a decline of 5.9 percent in value and improved by 9.9 percent in quantity, compared to the corresponding period of 2014-15. Depressed prices and rising cost of production encouraged farmers to substitute rice with fodder and maize.

Senior Vice Chairman of the Businessmen Panel of Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry in a statement expressed concern over falling rice exports terming it damaging for the economy. Rice exports have witnessed a fall of 8.6 percent during financial year 2016 by fetching $2.035 billion which is a matter of concern for the stakeholders. He urged the government to intervene immediately by forming a separate Rice Export Company from private sector to handle all rice related issues.

Zahid Hussain expressed concern over the future of the country's rice exports as some major markets have been lost while some others are under threat. Pakistan has missed annual rice export targets for five years necessitating government intervention before it is too late as 3.86 million metric tonnes of rice was exported in 2016 compared to 4.26 million metric tonnes on the corresponding period of the year before, he said.

He noted that the highest shipments took place in 2009-10 when earnings from rice exports stood at $2.2 billion. Since then, the export has remained almost stagnant and now it is going down.

Government must come forward to save the second highest foreign exchange earning sector and provide incentives to growers many of who are switching to other crops; and the government must enable exporters to regain their competitiveness in the international market, he demanded.

Pakistan is an agriculture driven economy. They must focus on agriculture and its value added products.

Indian Basmati rice is far better than Pakistani Basmati rice, I can confirm that after trying both.

I tried both and found no difference and I bet if you did a taste with desi folk or gorah folks, they couldn't either.

Actually, there are more than 10 different types of basmati that are grown here in India( might be same about the Pakisatn).
The length of the rice depends on the type grown.
Now the real taste and fragnance of Basmati rice is enhanced with aging and processing.

Aging is The main factor. 5 years old Rice of same type will be far superior than 1 year old rice.

So, its not just about Indian vs Pakistani rice,
Its about overall Industry.

Infact.. a large proportion of Rice exported from Pakistan is to India as well. The cost of production for Pakistani Farmers is high and that shows in less exports.

Is that right? Do you have any fact backing it up or do you just spit hate and stupidity often like this post? If you forgot, the topic was Rice exports. Has nothing to do with Motorways, nor are two even connected!!

Whenever I come across these silly, childish posts, on a serious topic of grave concern to an entire nation, it frustrates me to see how people like you, have no solution to anything. You guys just add hate and bullshiit to a serious topic by adding these silly rants.

How about stay on topic and actually once in a while, provide a positive contribution and a solution? But wait, you, like an individual's sorry state of mind, will go do sit-ins and will add more destruction to an already sensitive situation.

This here should be alarming as India is doing the same everywhere else. And no, Indian Rice aren't made in Heavens. Its still "Rice"!! But the issue is the Indian government and its businessmen who have spread so much all across the globe, working for Indian interests in every field. So you guys really need to see the real competition and not just come up with "home made" bullshiit. Let's contribute something positive to the thread!

Let me speak the plain truth about Pakistani rice.

Being ‘Nan eaters’ we don’t eat rice everyday.. We eat rice may be two or three times a week when pillow or biryani is cooked. However when we have visitors rice dish is a must. Hence a 10 Kg rice pack lasts for months. I always purchased Pakistani ‘Laila’ or ‘Badshah’ rice; the quality was not great but satisfactory.

During a recent visit to Dubai my wife was staying at her niece who eats rice with every meal. The pillow there was far more aromatic and of better quality than we make in London. My wife was told by her niece that she buys the Indian ‘Trophy’ rice from the shop next door. On return we purchased the ‘Tilda’ brand rice of India. I found it to be of excellent quality and comparable to what I used to get in Pakistan during the 60’s. Since then we have been buying Indian Tilda rice and pillow & biryani from it is of better quality than made for Laila or Badshah brands. Tilda is no doubt more expensive but since we don’t consume it every day, extra expense is negligible.

I have therefore come to the conclusion that at least the Tilda brand of rice is superior to Pakistani brands normally available in the UK. It is therefore possible that Iranian decision may also have something to do with quality. It appears that like everyone else in Pakistan, Pakistan Rice exporters also want to get rich quick and are not letting the basmati rice ‘Age’ long enough. When we don’t mind selling second quality medicines, why not rice?

Should overseas Pakistanis doubt my judgement; I suggest they buy a small pack of Tilda and of Pakistan rice, cook pillow or biryani exactly the same way from both the varieties and judge for themselves.

.
This has to do with Branding ... There is a far greater number of Indian Brands then Pakistani counterparts ... while Indian rice has an attractive packing and comes in various price ranges, Pakistani rice is packed in an ugly gunny or plastic bag with almost uniform price range among all its brands ...

Indian researchers managed to develop a variety of Basmati rice with long grains and one which gets cooked faster when boiled ... India has managed to develop crops which can withstand drought and that are pest resistant...

Most the Pakistani manufacturers are addicted to protectionism introduced by Bhutto to guarantee market share..which is forcing Pakistan consumers to pay top dollar prices for 1970's designed junk...as in the case of Pak Suzuki...and market liberalization will force these crooks out of business..plain and simple...The Chinese are coming in with superior quality and management if you work with the right person...
