MUMBAI: A row over an unpaid restaurant bill in a western Indian city escalated into a riot between Hindus and Muslims that left four people dead and 175 injured, police said on Monday.

The unrest broke out in Dhule in Maharashtra state on Sunday, special inspector general Deven Bharti told AFP. Four rioters were killed by police firing while 113 policemen were among the injured, he said.

Bharti said investigations were still under way, but it appeared that a quarrel over a restaurant bill had provoked a mass brawl that left shops smashed, motorbikes burned and glass strewn across the streets.

Previous riots between Hindus and Muslims in Dhule, which has a population of about 400,000 and is located 330 kilometres (205 miles) from Mumbai, broke out in October 2008, leaving 10 dead.

“The restaurant owner was from one community and the customer from the other,” Bharti explained, declining to name the parties involved.

“The customer went and took 50 people from his community and assaulted the restaurant owner, and people from the owner’s community also gathered and started arsoning and rioting,” he said.

Bharti said the police had used sticks, tear gas and plastic bullets before resorting to live ammunition to quell the trouble.

The area was put under a curfew that continued on Monday and was “peaceful and under control”, he added.

Hindus make up about 80 per cent of India’s population, while some 13 per cent are Muslim.

Sporadic, isolated clashes between the two groups still break out 65 years after the Indian subcontinent was carved into the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and secular yet Hindu-majority India after the end of British rule.

India saw mass riots between Hindus and Muslims 20 years ago — triggered when Hindu zealots demolished a mosque in the town of Ayodhya — that left more than 2,000 dead, mostly Muslims.

A decade later another 2,000 people died in riots between the two groups in Gujarat state.

Dhule riots: Police probe speeches by politicians - Indian Express

Speeches made by a few Muslim politicians in October 2012, ahead of the municipal elections, are believed to be at the bottom of the riots in Dhule on Sunday that saw four killed and over 200 injured, more than half of them policemen.

Responding to allegations by the Muslim community that the police could have avoided firing, Dayal said his men resorted to it after they were attacked. “Over 113 policemen were attacked, with 48 seriously injured and admitted. The superintendent has incurred four stitches on his cheek. ASP and deputy SP were attacked by a mob in a narrow alley with stones and all sorts of things,” said Dayal.

What did they eat? Didn't like the food?
Remember, both of the World War started with very minor incidents. This event was the trigger. Just like a prick in the balloon filled with water.

The tensions in many regions in India, especially communal tension is quite high.

A decade later another 2,000 people died in riots between the two groups in Gujarat state.

Why has this lie prevailed in certain sections? The actual number is officially out and separate aid packaged from centre and state can be claimed if anyone can add to that official list of victims. Yet this 2000 number is so successfully spread by some propagandist its amazing.

At topic - what a bunch of idiots. I'm glad police shot dead the rioters before they could kill any innocent people. This **** in dhule started in 2008 over a small issue. To anyone who instinctively thinks its hindus attacking muslims, well as i said, what a bunch of idiots.

if the resturant owner is a Hindu and customers Muslims then indeed he must have served cooked pig and if the resturant owner is a Muslim and the customers Hindus then may be he served them cooked cow meat

Yes, they served pork inside vada paav.

It won't be long before Muslims demand a separate country from the Hindus. India is screwed then. When the genie is out of the bottle it's impossible to put it back in.

Seems like every decade needs a good blood bath in India.
It's already 2013, a good communal riot is on the horizon.

And India doesn't need another partition. India needs to recognize that the only thing that holds it together is geography. There is not much love lost between the different casts, ethnicity, religious groups, etc and India is fighting against history to hold it together.

Eventually something is going to give and India will revert back to it's historic norm of many states in the subcontinent just like Europe.
