Russia and Egypt have reached a preliminary deal for Cairo to buy arms worth $3.5 billion from Moscow, Interfax news agency quoted the head of a Russian state arms agency as saying on Wednesday.

Speaking during an arms trade exhibition in South Africa, the head of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, Alexander Fomin, did not give further details.

Russia, the world's second-largest arms exporter, has sought to boost its military ties with Egypt after relations between Cairo and its long-standing ally Washington soured, causing some defense cooperation between the two countries to be frozen.

The head of Rosoboronexport, a state body that deals with arms exports, said the value of the agency's order book was high in spite of Western sanctions against Moscow over Ukraine.

"Today our orders portfolio stands at $38.7 billion. This is one of the strongest figures Rosoboronexport has had in recent years," Anatoly Isaykin told a news conference at the same arms expo, according to Interfax.

The United States and European Union have targeted Russia's arms industry as part of sanctions against Moscow for what they call its role in fanning separatist unrest in Ukraine.

They accuse Russia of sending weapons and fighters to reinforce rebels battling Ukrainian government troops -- a charge Moscow has rejected.

The US is still delaying the delivery of Apache and F-16 aircraft, it has also frozen a large chunk of the $1.3B annual military aid (FMF). The Russians are certainly more reliable partners when things go sideways as their actions in regards to Syria have shown, even though they are not big fans of Assad. Either way, Egypt is adopting a new but old policy of non alignment, it will no longer be penned to one camp.

Reports in regards to the systems procured have varied, all I can say for certain is that Egypt has procured the S-300VM (V4).

House of saud is paying the bill.

Egypt has negotiated with Russia (in 2009) before for the procurement of 1-2 squadrons of MiG-29 SMT and 4- Kilo Class subs and had negotiated from the 90s onwards for the procurement of the S-300. Egypt certainly has the funds to procure whatever it deems necessary and within budget, large deals such as the procurement of Type-209 Class submarines, C-295 and AN-74 aircraft, as well as large deals with Russia in 2005 for Mi-17 helicopters, and short- medium range SAMs (TOR, BUK) as well as extensive upgrades of existing systems proves that the Egyptian Armed Forces really isn't short for cash.

But you can believe what you want to either way it makes no difference.

This chunks are free of course. Stil better then the russians. So why did you think they would give you new? Russian are better then the americans? ahahaha

Go ask you neighbours algeria with ther 1.2 billion fighter projects. Like you are rich country like the KSA and you can buy anything you can? So this is not good the next one. Foreign politics sucks of egypt....

The Egyptian Military defense budget is more than 7 billion dollars , in addition to Egyptian military factories in Egypt that make foods and house electronics and equipment like LED TV's, dish washers, stoves , Microwaves , communication equipment, and hundreds of other civilian projects like hotels, etc. that provide them with an income up to 5 billion dollars every year, making the defense budget up to 10-15 billion dollars every year.

Of course not all the money is spent on buying weapons from other countries, no, Egypt have military factories, they build the M1A1 Abrams with more than 95% locally produced equipment , they build APC's called Fahd (an Egyptian variant of American M113) they build severl types of unmanned drone like Scarab and several other types, and lastly the Advanced Chinese ASN 209 UAV, produced 100% locally in Egypt under license since 2012, Egypt also makes Chinese K-8 trainer jets locally (they built locally more than 100+ jets until this day) , Egypt also has facilities for upgrading and repairing F-16 Engines, and they also produce F-16 spare parts locally, and much more weapons is built locally by Egyptian Army !

There's too much things that people on here don't know about the Egyptian military. Egypt also contracted for 4 French most modern Gowind corvettes, 3 of which will be built locally in Egypt (a purchase of 2 more Gowind is very likely, to reach a total of 6 Gowind corvettes).

And few days ago it was announced that Egypt is in talks with French Dassault to acquire an initial older of 24 Rafale jets to replace some of the older Mirage V jets, Egypt has 80 Mirage V jets, so the initial 24 Rafale order will be raised over years. the Rafale costs at least 100 million dollars per jet, 24 Rafale will cost around 2.5 - 3 billion dollars.

Egyptian military does have much money in their hands, people think Egyptian military is governed by the country's economy, actually no, Egyptian military has a separate economy :)

oh BTW, Egypt also signed a contract with Germany to acquire 4 Type-209 modern submarines, the first submarine will be delivered between 2015-2016
