Report: Indian army could use Russian satellite navigation system.

Moscow - India's military is considering using Russia's Glonass satellite system for navigation and targeting, a leading Russian newspaper reported Thursday.

Russian Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov offered Delhi access to the system during a recent meeting with his Indian counterpart Arackaparambil Kurien Antony, Kommersant newspaper wrote.

Glonass is a worldwide satellite navigation system similar to the US' GPS system. Russia placed its 24th Glonass satellite into orbit on Monday, upgrading the system to full worldwide coverage.

India could use Glonass for monitoring and controlling its own ballistic missiles and would avoid the cost of setting up its own worldwide satellite navigation network, the report said, citing a senior Russian army officer.

Russian army spokesmen have said that the Glonass system would allow guided missiles to strike targets anywhere on Earth with an error margin of less than one metre.

Antony was in Russia from Monday through Wednesday on a visit devoted primarily to talks on ongoing and future arms acquisitions from Moscow.

Topping India's Russian arms shopping list are a nuclear submarine, a retrofitted aircraft carrier and modern tanks.

Russia in 2010 sold some 3.5 billion dollars of weaponry and military equipment to India. A recently signed deal worth 1.5 billion dollars will deliver 29 MiG-29 fighter jets to India's navy by the end of 2012, according to news reports.

This News article reminds us of how India still depends on foreign help, especially big brother Russia, for all her needs.

Yes and you depend on China for all things ranging from radioactive/lead laced food items which guarantee a minimum of 20 years of existence ( asking for beyond 20 is being rather optimistic ), to "nokla" cell phones.

What we do = globalization and maximum utilization of available resources.
What you do = maximum utilization of someone else's charity ( aka begging )

"Begging" ? Look who is talking when India is the largest foreign aid recipient in history :

lol.. what will we do with them? showcase them for public display? Whats the use?
just kidding, not a bad idea we can increase nukes production rapidly

Do you mean Fissile material for 100 warheads???? Wats the need for tot in that???

GLONASS would be welcome indeed,..... but I fear using this might slow down the development of our own Satellite navigation system (GAGAN)
they detonated most powerful thermo nuclear bomb, ours is small they can help:lol:

Aha......the troll strikes again:sick:
BRIC Countries Discover Foreign Aid
India’s Foreign Aid Conversion

As the largest foreign aid recipient in history, India took in $55 billion in foreign aid between 1951 and 1992
55 billion dollars for 41 years=1.35Billion Dollars per annum
While the GoP received 1.351 billion dollars last year.
USAID Budget: Where does USAID's Money Go?
Can you provide sources to prove your claim that we are still the largest recipients of Foreign Aid,currently??
FYI,the largest recipient of foreign Aid since ww2 is Israel with over 100Billion Dollars!

Today, per capita aid to Pakistan (leaving out military aid) is almost 6 times that of India.. Go figure...

btw, the article posted by you shows how India is moving from receiving aid to giving aid.. It works better if you read the article before posting..

We funded it, assisted its launches into space and are planning to do so more. How does it make us "dependent"? Dependent is what Pakistan is where it relies everything on China; military stuff, economic investment, loans, assistance, energy, shipping, consumables and even satellites as well as its launch systems.

Guess we know who's dependent. The problem is, most Pakistanis on PDF aren't even living in Pakistan except on their statuses. Living in UK and USA, most of them think it is all hunky dory the same way back home which is why half the bandwidth goes in trolling. This is versus 99% Indians who live in India and know ground realities.

I'd recommend most to first go and live in their country, consult those who lived there all their lives and then claim all what they claimed earlier.

glonass is a good alternative as compare to the GPS. Still not sure if indian nevigation system can be as per these gps and glonass. As per my knowledge indian system would be strictly used for military only.

That's the whole idea. Military is who needs those signals more than casual civilians who are not like US where GPS is ciilian usage as well.

What do they mean by "is considering"? We funded half the project post Soviet collapse. We're supposed to be partner users in the project including 100% access to precision military signals for artillery and missile strike. Why such ambiguity now?

Yes, you are right, certain features of the Glonass are already in use with us. We deliberately opted out of a number of communicatcation/navigational systems when we purchased the C-130Js and the C-17s from the US so that we could replace them with Russian ones. Our indigenous system will take some more time to be fielded and the coverage will not be complete when fielded.

Already in use eh? But does it cover the entire spectrum of wherever precision signals are required? I mean at least Asia if not the entire world. We need entire South Asia and East Asia in coverage as of now ASAP. Is that on? I am also interested to know regarding those communication stuff that we rejected in C-17s and C-130Js; wasn't there news on that BEL will be providing indigenous made equipment that will be capable of receiving both GLONASS and our IRNSS signals?

India funded GLONASS? What

Can you give a link.

The later stages. Please check the Cooperation on GLONASS on google. Post-Soviet dissolution, there was a crisis in funding of GLONASS to complete its entire system in place. We participated including putting some components of our own (for our part) and agreed to launch some of the satellites from our positions. Funding came along simultaneously.

All this happened when USSR was no more. But yes, GLONASS in its true self was Soviet idea.
