TULA, May 7 (RIA Novosti) – The remains of 38 Soviet soldiers have been discovered in the Tula Region, central Russia, the site of bloody battles during the Second World War, the regional government said on Tuesday.

The search operation in the Tula Region’s Belyovsky district, organized by Vakhta Pamyati (Memory Watch) patriotic project, involved over 130 people from Russia and the post-Soviet states.

“Today the remains of 18 Soviet soldiers have been recovered, and the remains of another 20 soldiers have been discovered,” the government said citing the project head Denis Sadovnikov.
The remains will be interred in the Kurgan Slavy (Hill of Glory) memorial in the Belyovsky district. The ceremony will coincide with the celebration marking the anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945, which was part of the Second World War.

The city of Belyov was occupied by Nazi forces in October, 1941. More than 1,000 houses, 78 villages, two factories, schools, libraries and a theater were destroyed and 4,500 people were sent to work in Nazi Germany. The city was liberated by the Western Front in December, 1941.
