Tucson (Arizona), Nov. 11:

Raytheon, the Massachusetts-headquartered Defence and security systems supplier, feels that a number of its missiles can be fitted on the aircraft that the Indian Air Force plans to buy as part of its modernisation programme.

“Just last week we got an RFI (Request for Interest – the first stage of the bidding process) from the IAF for a HEAT (High Speed Expendable Aerial Target) missile,” said Mr Jeff White, Senior Programme Manager – Air Warfare Systems Business Development, Raytheon Missile Systems.

“Last night, I sent a letter of interest,” he told a group of Indian journalists on a visit to some of Raytheon’s facilities in the US at the invitation of the company, at Tucson on Thursday.

The RFI had asked for the price for a single unit as well as for multiples of 100, Mr White, a former US Marine Corps pilot, said. “We are pretty excited about the RFI,” he added.

Long-term ties

He and other Raytheon executives who interacted with the journalists over the last four days reiterated that the US company was interested in a long-term relationship with India, both for supplying missiles and for tying up with Indian companies that would manufacture either the systems or components for the missiles.

Technology transfer

Raytheon was in talks with a number of Indian companies, they said, but declined to name them. Over time, Raytheon was open to the idea of transferring technology to the Indian companies and to manufacturing in India, as a means to cut costs.

The Indian Air Force is evaluating the options for its MMRCA (Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft) programme. Raytheon feels that its missiles such as JSOW (Joint Standoff Weapon), Maverick, AMRAAM (Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile) and AIM-9X are capable of being integrated with any type of aircraft that the IAF may select for the programme. The Eurofighter and Rafale are the two in the race for the $10 billion MMRCA to supply about 125 aircraft.

According to Raytheon officials, the IAF has also issued two RFIs for Intelligence Surveillance Targeting and Reconnaissance radars. Raytheon officials have met IAF officials several times and discussed what the company could offer.

NEW DELHI - The United States arms companies remain keen to sell products for the fourth-generation fighter aircraft with missiles and other technology to India, although the Boeing lost the competition for the Indian Air Force Medium Multirole Combat Aircraft this year to European companies, reported local daily The Hindu on Friday.
Despite the loss of Boeing F18 Super Hornet and F16 Super Viper, American defense contractor Raytheon remains hopeful on the missiles the company thinks would go well with the aircraft the government of India has picked up, said the report.
At least two American missiles -- all-weather Paveway and Advanced Multirole Air-to-Air Missile (AAMRAAM) -- have been tested by the Indian Air Force, while Raytheon has agreed to respond to Indian request for High Speed Expendable Aerial Targeting offering the MALD, or Miniature Air Launched Decoy, said the report.
The company has developed the missile that can be fitted onto the C130J special forces transport aircraft that the Indian Air Force acquired recently from the United States.

Sure! The Miniature Air Launched Decoy (MALD) is a low-cost, air-launched programmable craft that accurately duplicates the combat flight profiles and signatures of U.S. and allied aircraft.

According to Raytheon, MALD is a flexible, modular and an expendable air-launched flight vehicle that looks like an aircraft to enemy integrated air defence systems (IADS). An air force can confuse and deceive enemy IADS by sending a formation of MALDs into hostile airspace.

MALD weighs less than 300 pounds and has a range of approximately 500 nautical miles (575 statute miles). After it is launched from its host aircraft, MALD flies a pre-programmed mission. In addition to protecting valuable aircraft, MALD offers counter air operations to neutralize air defence systems that pose a threat to aircraft.

They carry radar reflectors that can simulate the radar return of fighter or bomber aircraft. Enemy air defenses see them as incoming aircraft, and must decide to either shut down and hide, or activate and reveal their position.

Thanks a lot for detailed explanation, but there are some more questions striking in my mind....

Would it be integrated with aircraft or with a different launching pad?
How it will be resemble as an aircraft on enemy radar? as there specification should be entirely different from aircraft...
Would it be use as a targeting weapon(missile/rocket etc) or as a defence measure for aircraft?

So in short this can mimic the fighter jet and confuse enemy radars and defence system.. right.. can it be utilized in a aircraft to aircraft war as a decoy??

I guess you are talking about PAFs F16s, which have AIM 9M, AIM120C, Harpoon, JDAMs and I think Paveway LGBs as well. The weapons this article suggest are newer versions + anti radiation and stand off missiles, but as I meantioned in the MMRCA thread, it's more a PR campain of Raytheon, without any real link to EF or Rafale:

BRO, thats why I had said that it would be hard to get with full tot. Your question is fair enough,,,, we had laid our requirements and they can refuse as they are doing...so simple..

ADM-160B is better then ADM-160A but if indian plans to go the it should go for MALD-J (ADM-160C) as it has jamming system aswell. It seems they are offering MALD-J to India which is latest.

Best part is its low-cost and very light in weight, India can buy few for C-130 aswell
