Rangers detain MQM London activists after tensions simmer at Azizabad

Rangers detained several Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) London activists while they tried to hoist the party flag and write slogans on Liaquat Ali Khan Chowk, DawnNews reported on Friday.

While talking to the media about the incident, Rangers sector commander Brig Naseem Ahmad said, "Some people sat on the road reciting the Holy Quran. Some women came to us and requested permission to do recitation and the permission was granted."

"When these women returned, some male party workers raised party slogans and started putting up party flags in the area. The police took action on this and arrested some of the workers," he added.

When asked about the number of people detained, he said the people creating chaos were taken in.

As a result of the detention many party workers conducted a sit in on the road leading from Ayesha Manzil to Yadgar-e-Shuhada, disrupting the flow of traffic.

Liaquat Ali Khan Chowk was previously known as Mukka Chowk and holds a symbolic significance for MQM party workers.

Unrest at Pakka Qila
In Hyderabad around 10 MQM London activists were arrested as a large number of workers made their way towards Pakka Qila to pay their respects to slain party workers.

Police conducted teargas shelling and fired shots in the air to disperse the crowd.

Meanwhile, at Pakka Qila ground MQM Pakistan workers held a memorial programme for their slain party workers under heavy security provided by police and rangers personnel.

A scuffle broke out between Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) London workers and Rangers on Friday when personnel from the paramilitary force restrained party activists from entering the martyrs’ memorial near Karachi’s Mukka Chowk.



Rangers reportedly arrested five activists of the party as the force held talks with them to resolve the situation. A traffic gridlock was also witnessed on roads leading to the memorial with a stampede following the scuffle.

Earlier on October 22, Rangers took into custody three leaders of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) London from outside the Karachi Press Club (KPC).

The three leaders had arrived at the KPC to address journalists in connection with the ongoing arrests of the party workers in the metropolis.

On October 2, senior members of MQM-London Mustafa Azizabadi, Qasim Ali Raza and Wasay Jalil cancelled Farooq Sattar’s party membership for ‘treason’.

MQM-Pakistan completely separated itself from the aforementioned leaders on September 20 as well as Nadeem Nusrat, who had opposed the exclusion of Altaf from the party, and removed them from the Rabita Committee.

The divisions occurred after the party’s founder delivered an ‘anti-state’ speech on August 23 and reportedly incited his supporters to attack on media outlets in the city.

They should better disassociate thenselves with Altaf Bhai for any hope of mergence in the factions of MQM Pakistan
