Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) isusinga little known Senate rule in order to force a vote on the State Department’sapprovalof a $700 million arms sale to Pakistan.

Sen. Paul is invoking the Arms Export Control Act of 1976 in an attempt to end the potential sale of F-16 fighter aircraft to Pakistan, using an obscure provision that allows any senator to push a vote of disapproval.

According to the Congressional Research Service, after the senator introduces the resolution of disapproval, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has 10 days to report back to the Senate with its recommendation on the resolution.

If the committee doesn’t take up the measure within 10 days, the senator can move to secure a procedural floor vote.

The last time the act was invokedwas in 1986 by former Sen. Alan Cranston (D-CA), who forced a vote on banning arm sales to Saudi Arabia.

Paul introduced aresolutionlast month that would block the sale of arms to Pakistan. In addition, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) has introduced acompanionresolution in the House.

In a statement, Paul said,

Over the last few years we have seen that Pakistan is an uncertain ally when it comes to cooperating with the United States. As I travel in Kentucky, I meet countless individuals who are struggling to survive in this economy, we have no business sending hundreds of millions of dollars overseas.

Hehe these senators. Randy Paul just got his money back. He just spent so much in his bid for president. He needed money and he got it from the fastest pocket around at the moment.
What Indians are not understanding is this that at this moment Saudis need Pakistan and US/Isreal/Saudi Arabia have same goals in the region making pakistan important in this scenario as well. So merely on Afghanistan issue this sale won't be blocked and therefore go thru no matter what.

Don't get me wrong, I would like that Pakistan get those F16, but aren't the whole episode no less than a comedy show?....US wants Pakistan to have F16...Pakistan wants those F16 badly...while India playing the spoilsport and the whole tug of war is going on since last three months with no sight to end.

technically its 30 days for it to be blocked because the pentagon and the obama administration has approved the deal. so its near enough guarantied .rand paul needs to convince other members of congress too for it to have weight. them being lobbied by lm and uac and with the backing of the pentagon its near enough plain sailing. dont get your knickers in a twist.

dont even start with tug of war the rafale beats anything out there. you want the jets dirt cheap with goodies and france wants to sell them but at a premium. who will win?

Yet another wishful story to block the sale though seems our neighbors are more interested in lobbying against Pakistan rather own deal being stalled since long like Rafale, MMRCA etc. Should have concentrated about IAF needs. Already had enough of these threads yet ended with another confirmation from US that the deal will go thorough. Nothing much to see but proving efforts for the favours paid in cash by India yet will end as wasted.
