Archaeologist says Centre will be more than happy to release funds for this

At a time when the Chief Justice of India has called for an out-of-court settlement to the Babri Masjid dispute, K.K. Mohammed, former Regional Director (North), Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), has suggested that Muslims ask for a university or a hospital to be built in Ayodhya instead of being adamant on their demand on the mosque.

He told The Hindu here on Thursday, “Muslims have no emotional attachment to the mosque. It has nothing to do with the Prophet, caliphs or saints. It was built by a Muslim ruler. That’s all. We have had many mistakes in history. Ghazni, Ghouri, or Aurangazeb, whoever has committed it, we need not defend it. Lets move on,” Mr. Mohammed said.

“The Central government will be more than happy to release funds for a university or a hospital in Ayodhya,” he said.

Mr. Mohammed alleged that it was the Left historians who played a major role in complicating the Babri Masjid dispute, while clarifying that he does not identify himself with right-wing Hindu groups either.

Meanwhile, he reiterated his claim that a Vishnu temple existed in the area where the mosque is located now. Mr. Mohammed said that he was part of a team that was engaged in the excavation of the area and they chanced upon ruins of the temple there in 1977-78.

“I cannot say that it was a Ram temple or the Ram Janmabhumi is located there. But I’m pretty sure that a temple existed in the area as we unearthed a ‘vishnu hari sila phalak,’ which has inscriptions praising Lord Vishnu,” Mr. Mohammed said. There were also ruins of temple pillars, temple doors which had carvings of gods and goddesses and ‘amalka’, a flat stone disc, found on temple ‘stupas’.

“The style of construction of these temple ruins is peculiar to North India. The time of construction must have been between 11th century and 12th century, not earlier than that,” he said.

Mr. Mohammed claimed that he had written about it in 1990 in an English language newspaper. He has mentioned about it in his autobiography, Njan enna bharatheeyan, released in 2016 too. Mr. Mohammed’s major discoveries included Ibadat Khana, where Akbar proclaimed the formation of his composite religion Din-e-Elahi and the first Christian chapel built by the Mughal emperor at Fatehpur Sikri, and a host of Buddhist structures and Hindu temples.

After retiring from the ASI in 2012, Mr. Mohammed served as the project archaeological director, Agha Khan Trust for Culture, Hyderabad.

To pass a law does the government require just majority in both houses which BJP will have soon or 2/3rd majority for constitutional amendment??

Senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy on Sunday praised former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi as the only good human being in the (Nehru-Gandhi) family and said he had contributed to awakening of the Hindus.

“Rajiv Gandhi was the only good human being in the (Nehru-Gandhi) family and had contributed to awakening of the Hindus,” he said.

Swamy, a Rajya Sabha MP, recalled that the former Prime Minister had allowed telecast of popular mythological serial Ramayana on Doordarshan and later got the locks of Ram temple at Ayodhya opened for prayers.

“Rajiv (Gandhi) allowed telecast of the mythological soap Ramayana on Doordarshan, the national television network, despite fierce opposition from Congress leaders,” he said. Swamy exuded optimism about resolution of the vexed Ayodhya dispute in the wake of the Supreme Court’s prodding to the contending parties to work out an off-the-court settlement.

Babri Masjid committee ruled out an out-of-court settlement under PM Modi, Yogi Aditynath's leadership

LUCKNOW: The Babri Masjid Action Committee has said that an out-of-court settlement of the Ayodhya dispute was not possible with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at the helm of affairs. "With Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Aditya Nath Yogi at the helm of affairs, there is no hope that justice will prevail with the Muslims. Both of them have been BJP workers and supporters of Ram temple movement," Babri Masjid Committee Convenor Zafaryab Jilani said on Sunday, after a meeting of its office bearers in Lucknow.

Previous Prime Ministers were "neutral" on the contentious issue, Mr Jilani said. He also said that the solution to the Babri Masjid title suit can be arrived only through the Supreme Court.

The Babri Masjid (mosque) committee meeting was held against the backdrop of the Supreme Court recently asking parties involved to sit together and arrive at a consensus on the issue, which has been dragging-on for decades. "Efforts were made in the past for out-of-court settlement, but proved to be futile," Mr Jilani said after the meeting.

The Masjid committee office bearers were also of the view that if the Chief Justice of India or any other judge took an initiative to find a solution to the issue, Muslims would certainly support the move.

"We are ready if he (Chief Justice of India) nominates a team for hearing the matter. But an out-of-court settlement is not possible. If the Supreme Court passes an order in this regard, we will look at it," Mr Jilani had said on March 21, the day the Supreme Court had observed that the matter was "sensitive and sentimental and it is best to settle it amicably."

Lucknow: It seems every day there is something new and unusual happening in Uttar Pradesh after BJP's firebrand leader Yogi Adityanath became CM.

Now, a major development in connection with construction of Ram Temple has taken place in Lucknow.

Reportedly, some Muslims organisations have put out huge banners in Lucknow to support the construction of Ram temple at Ayodhya.

Azam Khan, who put out 10 these hoardings across Lucknow, is the president of Sri Ram Mandir Nirman Muslim Kar Sevak Manch.

Moreover, the man behind these pro-Ram Temple banners has sought security from police for his 'bold' step, according to a report in India Today.

Noteworthy, Yogi Adityanath is an ardent supporter of building Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya.

Also, recently the Supreme Court suggested that the dispute (title suit) should be settled out of court.

Moreover, Azam Khan has constituted a group of like-minded Muslims post to build a consensus on the issue within the community.

RSS leader Dattatreya Hosabale said on Thursday that the “Dharam Sansad” will decide the construction of a grand Ram temple at Ayodhya and the Sangh (RSS) will abide and act on it.

“Whatever decision the Dharam Sansad will take on the construction of the Ram temple, RSS will accept and implement it,” Dattatreya, considered close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said in Aurangabad in Bihar.

He said the construction of a grand Ram temple at the site where the now razed Babri Masjid stood was an emotional issue for Hindus.

President of All India Imam Organisation Imam Umer Ahmed Ilyasi in Allahabad.(HT Photo)

President of All-India Imam Organisation Imam Umer Ahmed Ilyasi on Saturday said Muslim clerics from all over the country would meet in New Delhi after Ramzan to find an amicable solution to the Ram Temple issue.

“I welcome the stand of the Supreme Court on the issue and believe that the dispute should be amicably settled by the Imams and Hindu saints through dialogue held in a cordial environment,” Ilyasi said while talking to a section of media.

The cleric was on a day-long visit to Allahabad as part of the Bharat Ekta Yatra aimed at strengthening communal harmony recently.

“We will try to arrive at a consensus for peaceful settlement to the issue which is acceptable to both Hindus and Muslims,” Ilyasi said.

In March, the Supreme Court had observed that the Ayodhya dispute should be settled amicably and Chief Justice JS Khehar had offered to mediate to help resolve the matter.

The court’s remarks had come after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy sought an early hearing of his plea seeking permission to build a Ram temple at the site of the demolished mosque.

“All parties can sit together and solve the dispute. In the proposed meet, the clerics will discuss the Ayodhya dispute. Based on the outcome of the meet, we will later hold talks with temple priests and saints,” he said.

Coming down heavily on Pakistan for mutilation of the bodies of army men, Ilyasi urged the Prime Minister and the home minister to give a befitting reply to Pakistan.

“Enough is enough. So many times dialogue has taken place between the two countries. Indians will no longer tolerance such incidents,” he added.

Ilyasi said Kashmiri children and youth, who should be having pens in their hands, were getting influenced by separatist leaders and pelting security forces with stones. “I believe these separatist leaders should go to Pakistan if they so desire. But staying in India and speaking the language that they are using is unacceptable,” he added.

Ilyasi urged the central government to declare cow the national animal of India but recommended that legal slaughterhouses should be allowed to function without any harassment.

He said triple talaq was being used as a tool of injustice against Muslim women. Expressing happiness that Muslims, especially women, were practicing yoga, he said it should not be associated with any religion.

Ramzan is expected to start on May 27 and last till June 24.

Indian Muslim clerics have shown some great wisdom. I hope they will develop a consensus so that problem can be resolved peacefully.

They have surrendered in a special CBI court in Lucknow
Five of the six persons accused in the Babri Masjid demolition case surrendered in a special CBI court here on Saturday and were subsequently released on bail.

Amid tight security in the ICMRT building in Indiranagar, where the court proceedings are taking place, former MP Ram Vilas Vedanti, Vishwa Hindu Parishad leaders Champat Rai, Baikunth Lal Sharma, Mahant Nritya Gopal Das and Dharmdas Maharaj reached there to surrender.

The court had issued summons to them.

Satish Pradhan of the Shiv Sena however did not appear and is likely to surrender next week.

Next hearing
The accused were granted bail after signing a surety bond worth ₹20,000. The next hearing will be held on May 22.

The court was hearing a case against the accused alleged to have been involved in the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya in 1992.

This comes a week after the Supreme Court allowed the CBI’s appeal in the Babri Masjid demolition case and restored criminal conspiracy charges against BJP leaders L.K. Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Uma Bharti and Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh, among others.

However, Mr. Singh, who was the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 1992, enjoys constitutional immunity as the Rajasthan Governor, and can be tried only after he leaves office.

The Supreme Court ordered that two separate cases in Lucknow and Raebareli against Mr. Advani, Dr. Joshi and Ms. Bharti and unknown ‘kar sevaks’ shall be brought together in one trial.

The Supreme Court also directed the trial court in Lucknow to commence the proceedings in four weeks and hear the matter on a day-to-day basis so as to complete the hearing in two years. The apex court also said there would be no ‘de novo’ (fresh) trial.

Order to CBI
The CBI has been ordered to ensure that at least one prosecution witness appears in the trial court for recording of testimony.

To ensure a speedy trial, the top court has given two important directions — first, no party shall be granted adjournments without the sessions judge being satisfied of the reasons for it; second, the trial judge hearing the case shall not be transferred till the judgment is delivered.

The Supreme Court also said that its order should be followed in letter and in spirit. If the parties involved feel that the top court’s order is not being followed properly, then they will be having the liberty to approach the apex court
