JEDDAH – The Civil Defense Directorate has mobilized all its personnel and resources to meet any emergency situation following a warning from the Presidency of Meteorology and Environment (PME) that there would be climatic fluctuations in various regions of the Kingdom over the coming few days.

PME urged the authorities concerned to take all precautionary measures to prevent any casualties.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education has directed education departments across the Kingdom to take precautionary measures, including suspension of classes in case of any severe climatic fluctuations in their regions. The Presidency’s warning, issued on Tuesday, was followed by climatic changes represented by rainfall and strong winds in some regions. Col. Saeed Al-Sarhan, spokesman of Civil Defense in Makkah region, said Civil Defense teams have swung into action to meet any contingency. “There are 16 support centers in Jeddah region that will instantly pass information to the operation rooms and disaster management center at the Makkah governorate in case of any incident,” he said.

It has instructed the emergency committee at each school to prepare a report about their contingency plans to deal with emergency situations. Abdul Majeed Al-Ghamdi, spokesman of education department in Jeddah, said that necessary directives have been issued to suspend classes in the event of rainfall.

They better have taken precautions this time around.

The weather is getting more crazy for each year and strange.:o:

Areas such as these for example and thousands of similar areas can be under danger again let alone big cities.

Saudi Gazette report

HAIL — Moderate to heavy rains hit Hail on Friday, while some parts of the northwestern region experienced hailstorms.

The rain caused the closure of several roads and power failures in many areas while some palm trees in the city were burned after lightning strikes.

Civil Defense teams were alerted after rain waters surrounded a house in Al-Naqrah neighborhood but it was reported that there was no immediate danger to the residents.

Spokesman for Hail Civil Defense Capt. Naf'ei Al-Harbi said there were no reported cases of injuries or damages. However, rescue teams were readied in all areas of the province, he added.

Al-Harbi asked the public to stay clear of valleys and flood-prone areas for their own safety.

The public should follow instructions set by the Civil Defense, which are published on social networking sites.

Hail traffic police spokesman Lt. Col. Bandar Al-Harbi said all police units have been mobilized and are monitoring the situation. There were no accidents reported and police are also cautioning motorists against entering or crossing valleys.

A source at Hail Municipality said the municipality will cooperate with all concerned bodies in Hail and the surrounding towns and villages during the rainy season.

The Civil Defense said Qurayyat, Tabuk and Madinah provinces are expected to receive rains in the coming few days.

Five people have been killed in floods in Arar this week, the Directorate General of Health Affairs in the Northern Province said Sunday. At least nine people were injured and treated at local hospitals.
Arar was in a state of mourning Sunday over the flood tragedy, which laid bare the inadequacy of field services in rescuing flood victims.
Residents called urged authorities to provide lifeboats, divers, helicopters and rescue and search equipment to rescue the marooned.
Ibrahim Abu Ras, mayor of Hail, ordered service and field departments in Hail and neighboring areas to take precautionary measures to ensure the safety of people and properties. He cited weather forecasts that predicted heavy rains in the area. The Presidency of Meteorology and Environment (PME) said Sunday it expects gusty rain and cloudy weather in Qassim and the Northern Borders Province. The condition will extend to the northeast of the country in the next couple of days.
Similar weather conditions will prevail in the southeastern highlands, including Asir, Jazan and Fursan Island. Surface winds are likely to reduce visibility.
Humidity will increase in the east and west of the Kingdom, with chances of fog at night and in the early morning hours.
In addition, high tides of about 1 to 1.5 meters are expected.

First unfortunate casualties.:(

Very tragic news. May they rest in peace.

Thanks bro.

@Arabian Legend, @Yzd Khalifa, @JUBA, @Bubblegum Crisis, @tyrant @Naifov, @BLACKEAGLE etc.

Remember to stay safe and don't do any safaris right now.

There are already over 250 dams in KSA, especially in the Western, Southern and mountainous parts of the country and more are getting built.
Why are casualties because of this happening nearly every year unlike in most other Arab countries? Is it because of the Hijazi and Najdi plateau that this happens more frequently?

I believe that Arar is also located on a limestone plateau, maybe this is why?

The monsoon rain only impacts the Southwestern part of the country so this is not an excuse.

Thanks bro.

Im flaying back to Canada this weekend where the weather condition is much more worse than here in KSA storm ..etc. No need to worry I'll be safe Inshallah.

I'm flying to Texas on Friday, weather there is milder than ours, but the least is that I'm gonna put my feet up for a little while, hanging out with my grandpa :D

The safest trip possible to both of you, Insha'Allah and enjoy your stay in Canada and Texas.:coffee: Never been to either myself.

And as the weather forecasts predicted weeks before and I sensed yet again more heavy rain hit the country. About 15-20 killed across the country if I remember correctly in the last 2-3 weeks.

At least the biggest palm grooves in the world will further expand and all the thousands of wadis in the non-mountanious areas of the country.

Rains make a mockery of the Kingdom’s drainage projects
LOCAL VIEWPOINT

Abdo Khal
Okaz

With every rainy season, one of our cities becomes a victim of the rains giving rise to the same cries and complaints of the season before.

Riyadh has been the first victim of the rainy season this year. The rains caused the death of three people in Riyadh, destroyed cars along the streets, damaged traffic signals and obstructed the flow of traffic. Water flooded government and private sector establishments and created pools in a number of neighborhoods. The rains have exposed the ineffectiveness of Riyadh’s drainage projects.

Every year, we complain about ineffective drainage systems which have become a problem for every town and city in the Kingdom. Although large sums of money have been spent on these projects, they still fail to drain the rain and floodwaters.

The government has spent more than SR12 billion on projects to protect towns and cities from floods. If you told any international expert that this much money had been spent on drainage projects in a year or two, he would never believe you. For this amount of money, a sewage network could be built to drain not only rainwater, but the waters of the seas and oceans as well!

Every city has the same problem. What is said about Jeddah can also be said about Riyadh, Dammam, Makkah, Jazan, Abha, Buraidah and Arar.

The residents of these cities complain about the useless drainage systems. The question which should be asked of all municipalities all over the Kingdom is: Why do your multi-million riyal projects always fail? Is it because of negligence or the absence of control? Why do you accept projects which are not executed according to international specifications and standards?

We need a fact-finding committee to investigate every big or small development project in every town and city so as to end corruption. We have not spent billions of riyals on drainage projects so that we can end up drowning in a drop of rainwater.

Heavy rain over parts of the Kingdom has caused flooding, rockslides and road closures. (AN photo)

JEDDAH: MD AL-SULAMI

Published — Saturday 11 January 2014

Last update 11 January 2014 2:30 am

The Presidency of Meteorology and Environment (PME) has forecast more heavy rain this weekend as downpours on Thursday and Friday caused flooding, rockslides and road closures in certain areas.
The Civil Defense closed down the Al-Karr to Taif road because torrential rain in the mountainous areas turned the main thoroughfare into a raging river.
Col. Saeed Sarhan, press spokesman of the Civil Defense in Makkah, said the officials closed the road at 2 a.m. He said there was also rainfall over Rabigh, Al-Abwa, Al-Kamil, Al-Shar’ and Al-Qao’r.
The Civil Defense also closed down Al-Hada Road in the middle of the week because of rockslides caused by the rain. There was also flooding in parts of Makkah including Bani Yazid and some neighboring villages and governorates.
The PME said Friday that it expects the downpours to continue over these areas with a significant chance of thunderstorms in Tabuk, including the coastal towns of Al-Wajh, Haql, Diba and Amlaj. It will spread to the western and northern parts of Riyadh province including Al-Dwadmi and parts of the capital, Al-Jouf and the Northern Border Province, Hail, Al-Qasim, Madinah and Yanbu.
The PME also expect thunderstorms to hit Makkah, and the coastal cities of Jeddah, Al-Laith and Al-Qunfuda. Rain is expected to fall over the southwestern heights of Asir, Jazan and Al-Baha.
The PME stated that surface winds on the Red Sea would vary from north to northwesterly in the northern part, and westerly to southwesterly in the southern half, at speeds of 15 to 42 km/hour. It expects waves of 1 to 1.5 meters in height. Wind over the Arabian Gulf would be south to southeasterly at speeds between 15 to 35 km/hour, it stated.

Heavy rains this entire weak in many parts of the Kingdom. This has become a normal occurrence at least a couple of times during winter, spring and autumn. Not only in KSA but other regional countries.

We humans will destroy the planet soon I predict.
