Railways Rolls out New & Improved AC 3-Tier Coaches with CCTV Cameras and Enhanced Safety Features

@Ankit Kumar 001 is right about shortages of loco faced in India. While Indian factories are one of the largest manufacturers of locomotives (CLW produces 280 odd electrics with 20 more coming from ELW Bhusawal and Dahod and DLW varanasi around 170-180 WDG 4D and WDP 4D with DMW patiala and Parel and Golden Rock workshops some ALCO 251C WDM3D). this figure still falls short of required number considering codal retirement of older WCAM 1 WAM 4 WAG 5B and ofcourse WDM2 diesels.
while a new Electric facility is coming up at Dankuni W Bengal, not much progress is made on diesel loco front.
so in respect to export of locos to PR, where in my understanding only ALCO variants would be universally useful (given lower axle loading), export would be tricky and this is where Chinese loco manufacturers have been successful in supply.
given the fact that Bangladesh, Sri lanka also use broad gauge rails along with Pakistan, maybe this issue can be taken up in some SAARC meet. Indian WDM 3A and WDM 3D class is already performing very well in both Bangladesh and Sri lanka.
hi anant,
You have vast knowledge of railway and the locomotives i read so many your post regarding the railway it is very informative. :enjoy::enjoy::enjoy:

how did you get these information did you have any family background or .....
Just a hobby, it started from railway photography and then later got attracted to the technical part of it.
IR btw are quite open as far as public access to technical and engineering aspects of the technology, so it really isn't very difficult to find details. Also during my photography trips and sessions, i've found common railway men very friendly.several loco pilots have graciously allowed me to have a look inside their locos and explained technical nuances.
just my humble opinion but to me learning about railways of a country like ours is a very nice way to learn about its history, people and culture.

so what are your profession is you are a professional photographer ????

Railways in a big country plays a big role in promoting national integration. I hope it is the case with India as well :)

There was news a while back, kaveri engine to power locos. Shed some light on it buddy.

no i'm a mechanical engineer working for a power plant.
photography is a hobby.

What do u use to click?

@anant_s

Sir one more question. As Japan is funding our western Freight Corridor, we will be buying 200 locomotives from Japan . What is the present status of the plan. And will we be getting TOT on those 9000hp beasts? Also which Japanese firm will deliver them?

using gas turbine engines is not something new. Union pacific and later russian railways have used GT as prime mover.
Use of kaveri was proposed for locomotives but it never materialized as EMD locos were available at 4500 hp for HHP application.
i cant say for sure but it looks like the proposal was an attempt to push forward a case for keeping the funding for project going.
as far as diesel locos are concerned we are likely to see 3 phase generator IGBT tech only at upto 6000 hp engine rating in foreseeable future in India.

i have my trusty old Canon 500D with 50 f1.8, 70-200 f4L IS and a 400 f 5.6L lenses.

This looks good.

Pakistan is making some GREAT AC coaches for our trains and the new ones really are stunning! A treat to travel in. I hope Railways can improve further on the timing issues and then it will be a perfect way to travel.

Well all I remember are the colorful, trucks, buses and coaches in Karachi. They look good and are painted by artists but I can't manage to climb onto or off one without falling. They keep moving even when they are told to stop... how are they told to stop? By banging on the door several times. I have travelled on them twice, both times fallen getting down. An old friend twisted his knee getting off it.

1. recently there was a news in International Rail Journal that a consortium led by Kawasaki heavy industries had won an order of 200 HHP locos for DFC. the technology will be provided by Hitachi and the loco is rated at 7200 kw (~9500 hp).
while most of these will come from Japan, last lot of about 120 odd will be assembled from kits at Dankuni plant. At present the Dankuni facility assembles a few WAG 9 from CLW kits.
2. if you recall a table i mentioned in one previous reply in another thread, you'll notice that japan will provide 200 Co-Co (meaning 6 powered axle) IGBT locos to IR. we will see these locos from 2017-18 onwards. these will be WAG 10 class as per present system.

3. apart from this there are plans for 12000 hp Bo-Bo+Bo-Bo (meaning permanently coupled loco units having 8 powered axles). these are likely to be produced at Madhepura plant Bihar. it is proposed to acquire about 800 such units. Siemens, Bombardier and Hitachi are in competition for these.

12000HP! Its some serious power. Thanks for the information sir.One request, it would be very nice if you open a thread on Indian Railways Locomotives, Rolling Stock and sheds Information. It would be awesome.

Train Set project: Chinese, Japanese cos among 7 consortiums in race

By PTI | 21 Aug, 2015, 07.17PM IST

NEW DELHI: Seven consortiums involving global companies including from China, Japan and Germany are in the race to bag the Rs 2,500 crore Train Set project in India.

A total of 14 companies have submitted applications for participating in the bid for procuring 15 EMU train sets, a first for Indian Railways, a senior Railway Ministry official involved with the project said today.

Railways had floated a global tender last month inviting bidders for the project.

While 40 coaches will be imported, 275 will be manufactured in the country as part ofNarendra Modi government's Make-in-India initiative.

The Train Sets, known for faster acceleration and deceleration, are to be pressed on Rajdhani and Shatabdi routes with the aim of reducing travel time between cities.

Companies from China, Japan, Canada, South Korea, France, Spain and Germany and two Indian PSUs had applied for the project.

Chinese ventures CSR Zhuhou Electric Locomotive and Zhuhou CSR Times Electric have formed a consortium for the global bidding while four Japanese firms are in the race separately in three different consortiums.

Two Indian PSUs are also bidding for the project as part of two different consortiums.

German firm Siemens has applied alone while Japan's Kawasaki and Toshiba have formed a consortium with Indian PSU BHEL. Hitachi, another Japanese major, has staked its claim for the ambitious railway project with Spanish Ansal Do.

Canadian multinational Bombardier has joined hands with CAF from Spain while BEML, another Indian PSU has tied up with French engineering major Alstom.

South Korean Rotem and Japanese Melco have formed consortium to participate in the bidding process.

The bidder will now be shortlisted through an evaluation process, the official said.

"Evaluation will take about a month and then shortlisted companies will be asked to submit their price bid by Novemeber 15. Contract will be awarded by December end after examining the price bid," the official said.

The selected bidder will have to manufacture and supply about 315 rail cars with AC sleeper as well seating facilities.
