Friends,I am starting this thread to discuss and share the news, views,opinion,analysis of current and future development project involving the Railway transport in Bangladesh.As we know BD govt. is undertaking 30 billion dollar investment scheme to upgrade the railway sector within 2030.A lot of things are happening and will happen regarding the railway sector.So it deserves a sticky thread to channel all the relevant news in one platform for convenience.I hope moderator will make this thread a sticky one.

The government has moved to cut the rail route between Dhaka and Chittagong by nearly 90 kilometres (kms) with a straight new line to be built for high-speed train, officials said.

Bangladesh Railway (BR) officials said they would build a fresh rail track from Dhaka to Comilla via Laksam parallel with the existing Dhaka-Chittagong highway to reduce the travel time and distance both.

Besides, they added, the state-owned Railway will upgrade the existing rail track between the capital, Dhaka, and the port city of Chittagong for introducing 200-km-speed trains.

"Reducing the distance by nearly 90kms between Dhaka and Chittagong through railway, the proposed track will meet the existing rail track in Comilla. In that case, the Chittagong-bound trains need not travel through the current route via Tongi-Bhairab-Akhaura-Brahmanbaria line," Chief Planning Officer of the BR Mr Anwarul Huq told the FE.

He said they would start feasibility study on the newly planned route from Dhaka to Comilla via Laksam. Besides, the study will assess the viability of the upgraded railway track for speedy train service.

The planning officer said they had sent a Tk 1.09-billion project proposal for conducting feasibility study and detailed design to the Planning Commission (PC) for approval.

"Simultaneously, we have been searching funds from foreign development partners for the main works of the proposed Dhaka-Chittagong railway track," Mr Huq said.

"Shortly after getting approval for the project from the PC, we will appoint consultant for beginning feasibility study and doing detailed design of the new route," the BR's planning officer said.

A PC official said they had received the BR project proposal. "Now we are scrutinising it."

Currently, the length of the Dhaka-Chittagong railway is 320.79kms as trains need to snake through the Dhaka-Tongi-Bhairab-Akhaura-Brahmanbaria-Comilla-Feni-Chittagong route.

Another BR official said if they could introduce the new route and upgrade the railway track for speedy trains, the journey time between Dhaka and Chittagong would come down to only two hours.

The official said the new railway line would not only help cut the journey time for the passengers but also ease the transportation of export and import cargoes between Dhaka and Chittagong.

Meanwhile, the BR has upgraded most portion of the 320kms Dhaka-Chittagong railway line into a double-track one from the existing single track with the financial support of the Asian Development Bank.

The state-run Railway has invested billions of US dollars over the last few years in upgrading its infrastructures and services for improving the internal transportation system as well as boarding Bangladesh onto the Trans-Asian Railway meant for continental journey.

ADB to provide $200m for railways

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide $200 million to modernise Bangladesh Railway (BR) to increase its passengers and goods transport capacities. The development partner is providing the loan under the “Railway Rolling Stock Project”.

A loan agreement on the funding will be signed between the government and the ADB on September 28.

According to the project document, the funding will help improve railways transport capacity on key routes such as the Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Khulna mainline by supporting the capacity building initiatives of the BR.

With the ADB's fund, BR will purchase 264 passenger carriages, 10 diesel electric locomotives for meter gauge main line network, four relief cranes, two train washing plants and one simulator for loco-master training.

The project will also enable BR to satisfy steadily growing demand and increase its market share.

China Railway Group, one of the world’s largest construction companies, said it has won a US$3.1 billion project to build a rail network in Bangladesh, according to company’s filing with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Tuesday.

The rail link will connect capital Dhaka to Jessore in southwestern Bangladesh, a distance of 168.6 kilometres, with the train designed to run at a top speed of 120 km/h, China Railway said. Construction will take 54 months to complete, the company said.

Chinese companies, backed by the government’s diplomatic and economic clout, have been snapping up infrastructure projects across Asia under the “One Belt, One Road” initiative.

“The project will promote trade links between Bangladesh and China, India as well as Myanmar,” state-run Xinhua News agency said in a report yesterday, after China Railway signed the construction contract with the Bangladeshi government.

The Dhaka-Jessore rail link isn’t China’s sole project in Bangladesh. In 2014, the Bangladeshi government awarded state-owned China Major Bridge Engineering Company Limited a US$1.55 billion contract to build its Padma Bridge project, which is to be completed in four years.

The contract size represents 3.3 per cent of China Railway Group’s latest audited operating revenue, the company said.

Beijing launched its “One Belt, One Road” strategy in 2013 to promote China’s economic and political presence overseas. The initiative involves building major energy and communications projects in central, west and southern Asia, as well as Africa and Europe.

Shares of China Railway rose 3.8 per cent to HK$6.31 on Tuesday trading in Hong Kong. The stock has risen 7.1 per cent this year.

Yeah,with the implement of “One Belt, One Road” strategy,more and more win-win projects will be done.

I have bought some "H&M" clothes and pants that made in Bangladesh instead of "Made in China".It's really a good trend that Bangladesh start to show demographic advantages and potentiality which like what China do in past years.Anyway,the development of railway and highway is really really necessary for transportation,movement of population,ect.

Just faster rail-tracks aren't enough. Ticketing and logistics have to be quicker too. I want ticket system to be like other developed nations, lesset human interaction. Automated, less chance of tickets flowing to black-market. Lesser designated rail-stations. It doesn't make sense to acquire high-speed trains if they stop every 2-3 kms ffs.
