Rafael, IMI Competing for Bradley’s APS
After Rafael was chosen to field its Trophy active protection system on the Abrams tank, the company is now developing a lighter version of the system for the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. Meanwhile, the US Army is also qualifying IMI System’s Iron Fist on the Bradley

Defense News reports that after Rafael has been chosen to field Trophy on the Abrams tank, the US Army continues to assess active protection systems for the Bradley Fighting Vehicle and the Stryker combat vehicle. In this context, the service is reportedly qualifying IMI System’s Iron Fist on the Bradley.

According to the report, Rafael has been conducting extensive testing of a lighter and smaller Trophy system for the Bradley as well. The Israeli company has reportedly invited the US military to attend a demonstration in August in Israel to witness the capability on a Bradley.

The characterization efforts for both Bradley and Stryker systems are delayed by roughly six to eight months depending on the system. Should one or both of them have insufficient performance or maturity, the Army could choose to adapt another system under evaluation to that platform; or the service could assess another non-developmental APS system to fit that same role; or furthermore, it could make a decision to move the system from engineering development activity under a science and technology development effort as part of the Vehicle Protection Systems program of record, US Army spokeswoman Ashley Givens told Defense News.

On Friday, BAE Systems has been awarded a $347.9 million contract to produce and procure component repair packages for up to 164 Bradley Fighting Vehicles, The Defense Post reported. However, the procurement budget for active protection systems for these vehicles must be obtained from another source.
