someone near Feiglin and very aknowledged about religion and Israel politics gave some explanations.
i just translate it in case anyone and you could be interested.
Rav Ovadia Yossef was respected by million people and became politically influent. Leaders from other partis regularly showed their respect and tried to gain his sympathy.
The loss is huge. really.
He was the spiritual leader of Shas parti, parti which i don't have even few affinity and less respect for his new leader. But he was mostly a giant of Torah knowledge. An exceptionnal Rav with huge knowledges ... if you could see the impressive library of him ..
And he was a very good man.
Against all odds, he was the one who officially said ethiopian Jews were 100% Jews and that we needed to stop to make a hell to them... he was the first one to defend a weak population against the ashkenaze laic intelligentsia, who were seeing these Jews as folklor and useless past.
He was the Rav who worked the most, kindly, to allow the Agounot women to be able to get married. He was the first one to allow widowed women (married to dead rabis during Kippour war) to get married again. Lot of rabbis were against him. He allowed in some specific cases abortion...
Like for 2010, the same media tried to convince that H'aredim ashkenazes refused to send their children in school with H'aredim sefarades, .. a story which was revealed fast to be a lie since the school it came from had already 40% sefarades.
Israeli media are mostly controlled by laic left ring, violently anti religion. Influence of Rav scared them.
Such a man who would have used such insults would have been hatred by Israelis. I think that the so many Israelis for the cermony show how much he was supported and by all social class.
[about someone saying Netanyahu saying he said to be sorry for his words] But there is nothing to do with being sorry from government or not. journalists have a big power in Israel. Media have said many lies in the past like discriminations between asheknazes/sefarades : politics immediately condemn this for electoral matter, without checking it was untrue.

Sadly, media and ashkenaze left ring in Israel spent time to slander Rav and transform his words during decades, and tried to show him for someone else, since they were scared of him. And so for his fake words about shoah victims, and so for the dead soldiers in Lebanon war in 2006, and so his words for non Jews. all these scandals are based on lies and changes of his words.

I mean clearly that Rav never said "shoah victims were sinful souls" or "soldiers killed in Lebanon in 2006 are dead because they didn't Shabbat." or anything stupid about non Jews (the last 10 years his position was, however, very hardened on the issue of the Arab-Israeli conflict ; that is true). these words are transformed or created or out of context : used again and again in Israeli media, but without reaching their goal.

As i said , after second intifada, his position became much harder (as the majority of Israelis) . Until 2000 he supported Oslo, then not. At the end of his life, he was totally against any new territorial concession.
