He is actually right.. alcohol withdrawal can kill you... there’s been cases where people are so far gone that doctors have actually advised them to keep drinking.. you cant just go cold turkey .. in most cases if u wana quit it is advisable to detox under doctor supervision

Apart for the psychiatric manifestations of acute withdrawal in chronic alcoholics like irritability, depression, suicidal tendencies or hallucinosis/psychosis, the serious physical syndromes like delirium tremens and withdrawal seizures/encephalopathy are a medical emergency and require urgent management. And no, these are not treated by tapering off alcohol doses, atleast in the government recognised de-addiction centres in my country.
